6.1 Mass of bituminous mixture
The mass, M, of the bituminous mixture to be introduced in the mould is a function of the maximum
density, ρm, of the bituminous mixture, of the interior dimensions of the mould, L, and, l, of the thickness
of the specimen, e, and of the air voids content, ν, either prescribed, or anticipated (compaction under
controlled energy):

(2)

where
M is the mass of slab, in kilograms (kg);
L is the interior length of mould, in millimetres (mm);
l is the interior width of mould, in millimetres (mm);
e is the final thickness of slab, in millimetres (mm);
ρm is the maximum density of a bituminous mixture, in Megagrams per cubic metre (Mg/m3);
ν is the air voids content in slab, in percent (%).

6.2 Filling the mould

Prepare the bituminous mixture according to EN 12697‑35, or take samples from the production of the
plant according to EN 12697‑27.

Prior to compaction, the metal mould and other metallic moveable parts in contact with the asphalt
shall be pre-heated. The pre-heating temperature shall be reported.
When the method using a wheel fitted with a pneumatic tyre is used, preheat the mould to the specified
compaction temperature for more than 2 h.
Lightly spray the mould and base plate with a release agent that is non miscible with bituminous binder
or, alternatively, cover the inner surface of the mould with paper.
Fill the mould with the mass, (M  ±  0,1  %) of the bituminous mixture reduced as described in 6.1 if
applicable, taking care to spread the mixture evenly in the mould with a shovel and avoiding any
segregation; tamp the mixture including the corners to achieve an even as possible surface before
compaction commences.
The asphalt mix temperature when filled into the compaction mould shall be the reference compaction
temperature, as specified in EN 12697‑35.

7 Compaction procedure

7.1 Method using wheels fitted with pneumatic tyres

--`,`,,`,`,,`,,,,,```,``,`,``,`-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

7.1.1 Test conditions

The following conditions shall be met:

— number of wheels:
— 1 for slabs measuring 500 mm × 180 mm;
— 2 twinned wheels with centre lines (180 ± 1) mm apart for slabs measuring 600 mm × 400 mm;
— translation velocity, Vt, of 200 mm/s to 500 mm/s;
— inflation pressure when static specified in Tables 1 to 4 to  ±  0,03  MPa depending on chosen
compaction mode;

when F ≥ 2 kN.

7.1.2 Compaction

7.1.2.1 General

Several types of compaction procedures may be used, depending on the size of the specimens and
whether the compaction energy or the final bulk density is specified.
Apply specified sweep plans so that compaction is progressive, and homogeneous throughout the
specimen. In the beginning and at the end of the compaction, use the blocked axis mode in order to
obtain specimens with a plane and smooth surface. For the main part of the compaction operate the
device in the freed axis mode.

7.1.2.2 Compaction by a specified energy

One of two levels of compaction energy shall be specified:

— light compaction for the sweep plan in Table 1 (specimen: L = 500 mm, l = 180 mm) and in Table 2
(specimen L = 600 mm, l = 400 mm);

— heavy compaction for the sweep plan in Table 3 (specimen L = 500 mm, l = 180 mm) and in Table 4
(specimen L = 600 mm, l = 400 mm).
For specimens of other dimensions, other sweep plans shall be derived for both levels of compaction
energy, with the same cumulated number of passes per unit area transverse section of the specimen in
the freed axis mode, making sure that the number of passes is evenly distributed along the width of the
specimen, with a symmetrical increase and decrease of number of passes on each axis.

7.1.2.3 Compaction to obtain a specified air voids content or compaction degree

The methods defined in 7.1.2.2 are not expected to allow the user to obtain a specified air voids content
for a particular specimen.
If specimens with a specific air voids content, ν, are required, compaction methods shall be modified.
Choose the method defined in 7.1.2.2 which gives the closest result above the desired air voids content,
then increase the number of passes making sure that the sweep plan is even (symmetrical increase and
decrease of number of passes), to avoid uneven compaction and surface deformations.
For this case, describe the procedure used on the test sheet and test reports.

7.1.2.4 Smooth cylinder for final compaction

The passes in blocked axis mode at the end of the procedure defined in 7.1.2.2 may be replaced with
4 passes to 6 passes in blocked axis mode using a smooth steel roller with no transverse displacement.

7.2 Methods using a smooth steel roller

--`,`,,`,`,,`,,,,,```,``,`,``,`-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

7.2.1 General

Spray a mild soapy solution on the roller or place a film between the roller and the slab.
Compaction shall be done in a smooth continuous motion without interruption.

7.2.2 Compaction by a specified energy

A fixed load, F ± 5 % shall be used if F ≥ 2 kN.

Compact until the required number of passes has been achieved.

7.2.3 Compaction with controlled compaction energy

The load shall be applied by a compaction management consisting of displacement — controlled pre-
load and load. The pre-load and the load shall be applied step by step by increasing the load after each
roller pass.

7.2.4 Compaction to obtain a specified air voids content or compaction degree

7.2.4.1 Compaction by a constant energy

A fixed load, F ± 20 % shall be used.

Compact until the roller bears down on the mould or, if the roller compactor is equipped so that
compaction stops when the desired height of the slab is reached, until the required sample height has
been achieved.

7.2.4.2 Compaction with controlled compaction energy

The number of the steps of load increases to achieve the main load shall be varied in such a way that a
prescribed air voids content will be achieved or until the desired final height of the slab is reached.

7.3 Method using a steel roller sector

7.3.1 General

Place a paper sheet on top of the asphalt surface.

Lower the roller sector until the roller surface reaches the surface of the levelled uncompacted
asphalt mixture.
The compaction procedure shall be commenced without delay and be completed within 5 min after
filling of the mould.

7.3.2 Compaction with combined height-controlled precompaction and force-controlled

main-compaction

7.3.2.1 Compaction parameters

During compaction with controlled compaction energy the roller sector shall roll over the surface of the
asphalt slab without any slipping at a velocity of (200 ± 100) mm/s. For allowing the inversion of the
movements at the end of the slab, the velocity is reduced at the end of the slabs.

7.3.2.2 Pre compaction (height controlled)

For levelling the slab surface, a displacement controlled compaction-loading is applied, see Figure 4.
During each roller pass, the roller shall be lowered for (0,5 ± 0,1) mm. After the roller pass the location
of the mould is held constant for (0,5 ± 0,1) s at the edge of the compaction mould.
The compaction is proceeded until the vertical load reaches a value of (10 ± 1) N per mm slab width. The
roller is held on constant height for additional 5 passes. Afterwards the load is reduced to 0 by raising
the roller with (0,5 ± 0,1) mm per pass.

7.3.2.3 Main compaction (force controlled)

During main compaction the vertical force is controlled. After each roller pass, the location of the mould
is held constant for (0,5 ± 0,1) s when the roller sector is located at the edge of the compaction mould.
Following roller passes are applied:
1. Levelling: 15 roller passes with a constant force of (2 ± 1) N/mm slab width
2. Compaction: 15 roller passes with increasing force of (5 ± 1) N/mm slab width per roller pass up to a
maximum force of (75 ± 1) N/mm slab width
3. De-loading: 15 roller passes with decreasing force of (5 ± 1) N/mm slab width per roller pass
Other number of roller passes or vertical forces may be applied if the compaction results in non-
homogeneous density distribution of the slab. Especially mixtures with low compaction resistance (e.g.
AC 5, binders 160/220) may require a reduced number of roller passes or reduced vertical force.

7.3.3 Height-controlled compaction

During compaction the change in height per roller pass is controlled. The roller is lowered onto the
loose mixture until a force of (3,84 ± 0,38) N/mm slab width is reached. The compaction phase starts
by decreasing the height of the mixture by (0,25  ±  0,05)  mm per roller pass until the target height
of the compacted slab is reached. After the target height is achieved, a de-loading phase follows the
compaction phase. Within the de-loading phase, the force is decreased uniformly, so that the force after
25 roller passes is at (0,38 ± 0,04) N/mm slab width where after the force is immediately released.

7.3.4 Compaction with controlled compaction energy

The number of the steps of load increases to achieve the main load shall be varied in such a way that a
prescribed air voids content will be achieved or until the desired final height of the slab is reached.

7.4 Method using a roller running on vertical sliding steel plates

This method is used only for the preparation of specimens at a specified density (or voids content).
The sliding plates shall be preheated together with the mould as specified in 6.2.
Place the sliding plates vertical and tightly together in the mould on top of the bituminous mixture. Set
the moving table or the roller into motion.
Push the roller down onto the steel plates and apply the load, F.
Keep the load constant ± 20 % during compaction, until the roller bears down on the mould, or until the
maximum vertical displacement of the roller relative to the table is achieved.

7.5 Demoulding of the slab

When compaction is completed, let the slab cool down before demoulding in order to avoid damages
to the slab.
