Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential
Physical Locations

• When you access the physical

location of the server, you should
first answer these questions:
– Can you gain physical access to the
server?
– Is the server rack mounted? Are you
qualified to work on racks?
– Do you have the right tools for the
job?
– Do you have the key to the rack?
– Is the server clustered? How do you
know?
– If the server is clustered, are you
qualified to work on it?

Server Memory Requirements

• Unreliable memory severely impacts performance

• Main memory in a server is used as a system cache
• Disk access speeds are too slow for cache
• Insufficient memory can severely impact the overall performance of a server
• Need to improve reliability of large memory arrays

ThinkServer Installation/Setup/Configuration | © 2008 Lenovo Page 48

Error Correcting Code Memory (ECC)

• Fault tolerant
– Can correct single bit errors without shutting down the server
– Can only detect double bit errors, but if more than two data bits are in error on the
same access, the additional errors may not be detected by the system and could
result in server downtime.
• When writing to ECC memory, a calculation is performed on the data to create check bits.
– Check bits are stored along with the data.
– When data is read from memory:
• The data is read from memory, the same calculation is performed on the data and the new
check bits are compared to the check bits that were stored with the data.
– If the two checksums values are equal, then data integrity is maintained.
– ECC ensures integrity of read data

Fully Buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM)

• Used to increase reliability, speed

and density of memory systems
• Conventional memory limited by
increasing number of data lines that
have to be connected from the
memory controller to the DRAM
module
• As memory width, access speed
increases, the signal degrades at
the interface of the bus and the
device
• This limits the speed and memory
density.
• FB-DIMMs take a different
approach to solve this problem
• Found in select ThinkServers

Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential
ThinkServer Advanced ECC Memory

• Lenovo uses Advanced ECC memory in some models of

ThinkServers
• Advanced ECC memory was designed to provide improved protection
to servers with large amounts of memory installed
• Advanced ECC corrects multiple single bit errors by using the ECC
protection technique multiple times
– Similar to RAID protection for disks
• Data bits and parity are written across multiple chips on the DIMM
• Advanced ECC allows system to correct 2, 3, and 4 multi-bit errors per DIMM and
eight bits per memory controller whether on a single chip or multiple chips
• Advanced ECC functionality moved to memory controller instead of ASIC chip on
DIMM
• Implemented using standard ECC DIMMs
– Advanced ECC use may result in up to 99.94% data reliability

ThinkServer Installation/Setup/Configuration | © 2008 Lenovo Page 52

Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential Lenovo Confidential
Proper Advanced ECC memory installation
• If you want to enable Advanced
ECC, two 1GB DIMMs must be
installed
– installed in slots 1 and 4.
– When you install additional DIMMs,
you must install two identical DIMMS
at a time, in the order shown in the
following table, to maintain
performance.

Pair DIMM connectors

1 1 and 4
2 7 and 10
3 2 and 5
4 8 and 11
5 3 and 6
6 9 and 12

• No memory sub-system is completely fail proof,
– however tests that simulated 3 year workloads compared failure rates of
both ECC memory and Advanced ECC.
– The reliability rate of standard ECC memory was measured at 91% versus
99.94% reliability of Advanced ECC.

Online-Spare Memory

• Provides a standby function in

memory
– Can maintain server operations if
memory problems occur
• Spare DIMMs are installed in the
server that match the DIMMs being
used by the operating system
• Memory controller monitors the
performance of the memory
– Before a DIMM fails, the memory
controller will move the contents
of the failing DIMMs to the spare
DIMMs
– Memory controller performs all
the monitoring and swapping
tasks.

Memory Mirroring

• Memory mirroring requires two identical banks of memory in the

system
– Both banks of memory are updated simultaneously.
• If a problem occurs the memory controller will cease writing to that bank and
disable it

The Role of the Processor

• Processors execute code

– Execution takes place inside the
processor
– Computed results are sent to
memory
• Multiple processors or multiple
cores enable more simultaneous
code executions
– Higher demands on the memory
subsystem when multiple
processor cores are deployed

Multiprocessing Considerations

• ThinkServers can have one or two

processor sockets
– More than one processor socket is
defined as ‘multiprocessing’, and
‘symmetric multiprocessing’
– Multiprocessing is the coordinated
processing of programs by more than
one processor
– Symmetric multiprocessing or SMP
refers to multiple processors that
share the same resources such as
memory and the I/O bus.
– Shared memory design, a memory
and cache controller ensures that
information is processed in an orderly
fashion Dual Intel® Xeon® Processors

Considerations
• If the user selects an auto-installation on a system, all the data on the
partitions will be deleted.
– Workaround: In order to protect the data from other partitions while using
EasyStartup, the user should select the Manual Installation configuration.
• A user cannot set the workgroup entry in Windows 2003 SBS, it is a
Microsoft limitation.
– Workaround: The user must configure a domain controller while trying to install
Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server.
• When using the side digital keyboard to type in the text fields, the focus will
not automatically move to the next textbox.
– Workaround: The user should use the regular keys to type and the focus will
automatically move to the next textbox.

Mini-EasyUpdate

• Mini-EasyUpdate is a smaller version of EasyUpdate,

– Used as a standalone installation utility that runs without an installation
process (e.g. no registry keys or services are required)

• Mini-EasyUpdate searches for the update packages from a repository

that you create.
– Repository can be created on
• Your local hard drive,
• Network share,
• External media such as a CD, DVD, or USB hard drive

• When Mini-EasyUpdate finishes installing applicable packages, no

registry keys relating to mini-EasyUpdate exist
– Thus the user only needs to delete the folder containing mini-EasyUpdate
• To remove all files associated with mini-EasyUpdate
• And the associated repository (e.g. zero-footprint)

LED and Easy LED Diagnostics

• Easy LED Diagnostics is a system of LEDs on various external and

internal components of the server.
– When an error occurs, LEDs are lit throughout the server.
• By viewing the LEDs in a particular order, you can often identify the source of the
error.
• When LEDs are lit to indicate an error, they remain lit when the server is turned off,
– provided that the server is still connected to power and the power supply is operating
correctly.

LED and Easy LED Diagnostics Cont

• If an error occurs, view the Easy LED Diagnostics LEDs in the

following order:
– 1. Look at the operator information panel on the front of the server.
• If the information LED is lit, it indicates that information about a suboptimal
condition in the server is available in the BMC system event log or in the system
event/error log.
• If the system-error LED is lit, it indicates that an error has occurred; go to step 2.
– The following illustration shows the operator information panel.

• To view the Easy LED Diagnostics panel, slide the latch to the left on
the front of the operator information panel and pull the panel forward.
– This reveals the Easy LED Diagnostics panel.
– Lit LEDs on this panel indicate the type of error that has occurred.

• Note any LEDs that are lit, and then push the Easy LED Diagnostics
panel back into the server.

• Look at the system service label on the top of the server,

– The list gives an overview of internal components that correspond to the
LEDs on the Easy LED Diagnostics panel.

– This information and the chart on “Easy LED Diagnostics LEDs” in the
HMM can often provide enough information to diagnose the error.
– Remove the server cover and look inside the server for lit LEDs. A lit LED
on or beside a component identifies the component that is causing the error.

• The following example describes the LEDs on the Easy LED Diagnostics panel and
suggested actions to correct the detected problems
– CPU A microprocessor has failed.
• 1. Make sure that the failing microprocessor, which is indicated by a lit LED on the
system board, is installed correctly.
• 2. Make sure that a RAID 8k or 8k-l SAS controller is installed and correctly seated, and
make sure that the battery for the RAID 8k SAS controller is installed correctly.
• 3. If the problem remains, replace the microprocessor (trained service technician only).

• LED Remind button

– You can use the remind button on the Easy LED Diagnostics panel to put
the system-error LED on the operator information panel into Remind mode.
• When you press the remind button, you acknowledge the error but indicate that
you will not take immediate action.
• The system-error LED flashes while it is in Remind mode and stays in Remind
mode until one of the following conditions occurs:
– All known errors are corrected.
– The server is restarted.
– A new error occurs, causing the system-error LED to be lit again.

• Note: Check the system event/error log and BMC system event log
for additional information before replacing a FRU.
