PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
FANNIE MAE , WASHINGTON DC 2009 - present
DIRECTOR - CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR GRID COMPUTING, AND SHARED INFRASTRUCTURE
- In charge of implementing the Enterprise Grid Infrastructure at Fannie Mae
- Initial purpose was to create a common analytics platform for all pricing, fin
ancial modeling, and risk analysis functions for three business groups: Capital
Markets, Enterprise Risk and Strategy and Single Family
- The initial size of the cluster was around 4K cores and is to be expanded grad
ually to 15K cores within two separate data centers, running on Intel hardware p
rimarily for compute engines, with Linux and Windows as the primary Operating Sy
stems.
- Solaris and AIX cores are also in the roadmap for implementation during 2011
- Besides home grown developed applications, that rely on Monte Carlo modeling s
imulations, the implementation also calls starting January 2011 for migrating to
the Grid a series of third party tools, such as SAS, R and MatLab
- Accountable for the entire funding of $25 mill for this implementation
- Set up the center of excellence, which in effect consisted of three distinct g
roups: Engineering, Operations and On-boarding
- As part of the project, implemented 10G Network and a new parallel file system
technology (IBRIX) to be able to handle the volume of cores on the Grid
- Ensured complete success of the project and proved substantial hard savings an
d cost avoidances, primarily by reducing by a factor of three the execution time
and by increasing the overall utilization from 12% to 35% in the first two mont
hs, therefore deferring additional infrastructure cost.
- Currently planning phase two of the implementation, for 2011 and beyond
- Also in process of planning the new shared infrastructure for the company, whi
ch will rely heavily on virtualization (Solaris, AIX, Linux, vmware) and also de
ployment of cloud technology at Fannie Mae
- Both private and public cloud are in the scope of the project, but the initial
deployment will be for private cloud
- Transition to a charge back system is in the scope
- Continue to on-board applications to the grid ( an estimated 6 large applicati
ons will be on-boarded within the next 6 months)
