Dr. Cathay Ikeda, Dr. Bonnie Bittman
Mentor Teacher: Jennifer Orta
EDEF 345
1. Grade Level: 7th Grade

2. Subject/Content Area: Social Studies/Unification Unit

3. Time Frame: 1-1.5hrs

4. Learning Theory: Describe and discuss the learning theory/method that will guide
your instruction. Describe how you will make use of it.
I will use Vygotsky’s theory of socio-cultural approaches to help guide my instruction. I will
utilize his concept of Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffolding. For ZPD first, I
will then identify where my students are with their content knowledge and developmentally by
asking them questions during a group and class discussions on google jamboard. This will help
me determine where they are in their understanding and able to determine how they use it to
apply to their own experiences.

5. Content: Describe the content that will be the focus of the lesson (This needs to be
consistent with the learning goals, objectives, and content standards). Also include
related content that the students have previously encountered that will support the
learning in this lesson.
Students will be learning about the unification of the Hawaiian islands, where they can apply
their own prior knowledge of the content to create the basis of the discussion. Also to describe
the different encounters to the Hawaiian islands, along with the impacts of unification.

6. Learning goals/objectives: List the learning goal(s) or objectives for this lesson
(These are very specific and often begin with SWBT (Students will be able to..)
● Students will be able to demonstrate critical thinking
● Students will be able to identify key ideas of unification in the Hawaiian islands
● Students will be able to compare and contrast interactions between Captain Cook
and the Hawaiian people
● Students will be able to identify areas in the Hawaiian islands using a map

7. Standards: List the content standards that guide (HCPS III, Common Core Standards,
List the standards as they appear in these documents. Keep it focused, a minimum of 2
but no more than 4 standards listed)
Mckee 2

Standard 3: History: HISTORY OF THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM-Understand

important historical events in the history of the Hawaii Kingdom
Topic: Unification Benchmark SS.7HHK.3.1
Explain the events (including warfare and land control), people (including Kamehameha,
Kekuhaupio, Kalaniopuu, Kiwalao, Keoua, Keawemauhili, Kahekili, Kalanikupule,
Davies, and Young), and ideas (including foreign advisors, weaponry, and strategies) that
led to the unification of the Hawaiian Islands

monarchy, peaceful rule of Kamehameha, Mamala Hoe Kanawai, organization of
government, and rebuilding of resources)

8. Materials: Provide a list of materials you will need to conduct the lesson
● Google powerpoint slides
● Google classroom
● Google JamBoard
● Google Meets

9. Technology: Describe any technology you will employ for the lesson and provide a
short description of what it will be used for.
Google application will be used to conduct the information of lecture and instruction
through google classroom and google powerpoint slides. Google classroom will be used
to implement google jamboard for group and class collaboration, and google meets is
used for online learning due to covid-19 situation.

10. Procedures: Describe step by step how you will conduct the lesson. (Include in your
description how you will inform students of the learning goals and objectives, and how
you will clearly end the lesson by summarizing for students the learning goals and
objectives for the lesson, and how you will begin transitioning to the next activity)

1. I will instruct students when they get into class to take out there planners and
write the Do Now assignment for today’s lesson from my shared screen on google
powerpoint slides
a. Good Morning Everyone! Please take a few minutes to take out your
planners and write down the “DO NOW” for today’s lesson, and please
show me your planners before you put them away.
2. While the students are writing the Do Now in their planners I will prepare my
google document that has the assigned groups for the group activities. Also I will
paste the link to that google doc into the chatbox.
Mckee 3

a. Okay class, after you have shown me your planners and got my okay, then
please refer to the chatbox where the link to our next activity will be.
3. I will then instruct them all to click on the link for the google document of their
groups for the google Jam Board collaboration.
a. In the chat there is a link that I have provided for your group work today,
so click on the link to see who is your group.
4. After they have clicked the link I would pull up on my shared screen the
powerpoint presentation of today’s lesson
a. Okay now let's come back to my screen, since you all know who is in your
groups, Today we will be learning about the ‘Unification Of the Hawaiian
Islands’. Can everyone see my screen?
5. After knowing all the students are on the right track and looking at my presented
screen I will then start with the first slide in the powerpoint
a. Can anyone tell me what does ‘Unification’ mean? You can answer by
turning on your mic. So does anyone know? Take a guess?
6. When 3 students have answered my question based on prior knowledge if they
may know what unification means, I will then reveal the definition of
‘Unification’
a. Those were all wonderful answers! The definition of Unification is the
bringing together into one unit. Like one ruler; King Kamehameha. And
just like today, the separate islands of Hawai’i are now under one nation.
b. Okay so as we now know what the meaning of unification is, let's get in
our unit.. “The unification of the Hawaiian Islands”
7. Transitioning to the next powerpoint slide, I will discuss where King
Kamehameha was born and introduce the encounters of Captain Cook and King
Kamehameha, and having them use their map of the Hawaiian islands to pinpoint
significant areas.
a. As we take a look at the next slide, just some background information,
King Kamehameha was the first ruler of the kingdom of Hawai’i and he
was born on the Big Island.
b. So where was King Kamehameha born? You can turn on your mic to
answer. (Student answers) Great! And we want to keep in mind that Big
Island is Hawai’i, where King Kamehameha was born.
8. I will now introduce Captain Cook into the discussion and pull up the next slide.
a. In 1788 in Hana, King Kamehameha meets Captain Cook and discovers
unique sticks that fire bullets. He has yet to see their impact in battle.
b. So if we take a look at the map again, the landing of Captain cook is under
Kailua, which occurred in 1788’
c. So now that we know King Kamehameha has encountered Captain Cook,
what may he have thought of their arrival.
Mckee 4

d. Do you all remember the groups I had you take a look at in the beginning
of class? (students will answer yes or no, if not I will post the link in the
chatbox again, and share my screen of that google doc.) So click the links
that are in your groups section, and make sure that is your group.
e. You guys will be directed to a google Jamboard. So your screen should
look like mines.
9. I will pull up my google jamboard on my end to demonstrate what they can do to
answer the questions of the perspectives of King Kamehameha, Captain Cook and
the Hawaiian People.
a. So have all of you clicked the link for your groups? (Students answer) So
your screen should look like mine. This is a google Jamboard, this is a fun
way for all of you to be able to collaborate as a group to answer these
questions. So every group is different in that they may have King
Kamehameha, Captain Cook, or The Hawaiian People.
10. I will demonstrate some basic ways for them to answer on the Jam Board
a. So when we answer on the Jamboard there is multiple ways to answer. We
can use pictures, or sticky notes to post our answers. So based on the
questions for your person your group has gotten, use a sticky note or a
picture that describes what each person may feel, see, taste, hear and
smell.
b. The group who has King Kamehameha, your directions say ‘Imagine you
are King Kamehameha. A strange ship full of people just landed on your
island. They look different than you and speak a different language. What
would you feel, smell, hear, taste, and see.’
c. The group that has Captain Cook, your directions say, ‘Imagine you are
Captain Cook. You have been sailing and exploring the Pacific and
discovered some beautiful islands in the middle of the vast ocean full of
people. They look different than you and speak a different language. What
would you feel, smell, hear, taste, and see.
d. And the last group, you guys have The Hawaiian people. Your directions
say ‘Imagine you are a native Hawaiian living in the 18th century. A
strange ship full of people just landed on the island. They look different
than you and speak a different language. What would you feel, smell, hear,
taste, and see.
11. I will pop into each groups google jam board to see their progress of group
collaboration to answer the following questions of their person they were
assigned.
a. Okay guys, when your group is done, come back to the google meets and
take a look at my shared screen for your next directions
Mckee 5

b. So group 1, said ...Group 2 said… group 3 said… great answers class.

Can someone from group 1 tell me why their answer was that? Can
someone from group 2 and 3 tell me why their answer was that?.. All your
answers were great.
12. After they have completed their jamboard. I will continue with my powerpoint
slide.
a. Okay so now we have an understanding of what each person may have
felt, seen, heard, tasted, and smelt. We can now learn more about Unifying
the Hawaiian Islands.
13. I will go to the next slide and continue with their map labeling.
a. So on my next slide, if you all can see my screen. In 1738 on Hawaii
Island, Kamehameha started a campaign to unify the islands by
unsuccessfully attacking Hilo. So 1785, in Hilo there was a new attack.
14. Then I turn to next slide in the powerpoint
a. In 1788 on the island of Kauai, Kamehameha traded land he controls for
guns, including a swivel cannon. He then captures sailor John Young,
kidnaps Isaac Davis and names them military advisors.
15. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. In 1790 on the island of Maui, Kamehameha fights near Huelo and uses
cannon for the first time in Iao Valley. Blood and bodies clog the stream,
giving the fight the name “Kapaniwai” (Damming of the Water). He
leaves before conquering Maui.
16. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. So Hawaii Island in 1790 there were footprints found. Kamehameha was
aided by the eruption of Kilaeua and defeated Keoua.
17. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. In 1791 on Hawaii Island a temple was built to lure in Keoua for peace,
but he was killed by Kamehameha’s warriors.
18. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. Kamehameha first took control of all the Districts of Hawaii.
b. Is everyone okay, anyone lost? Let me know now. Okay let's move on.
19. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. In 1794, Kamehameha announced that Hawaiian people are subjects of
Great Britain and under its protection. Great Britain never agreed, but
Vancouver gifts Kamehameha with a sailing ship with a Union Jack sail.

20. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. In 1795 on the island of Maui again, King Kamehameha destroys Lahaina,
then conquers Maui, Lanai and Molokai in February.
21. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. Everyone okay?
Mckee 6

b. So in this next slide 1795 on the island of O’ahu, Kamehameha sails to

Oahu and wins the Battle of Nu‘uanu near Waikiki to control Oahu. The
leader of Kauai eludes capture.
22. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. So in 1796 on the island of Kauai, it was another unsuccessful mission.
And in 1802 on the island of Maui, the Fleet landed in Maui to prepare to
invade Kauai again. Epidemic hits warriors and ends the expedition.
23. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. We are almost there guys!! Yayyy!
b. In 1810 on the islands of Kauai, and Niihau Kamehameha Completed
unification by acquiring Kauai and Niihau by agreement with ali‘i without
a fight.
24. Turn to the next slide to move on
a. So in 1812-1819, Kohala, Hawaii Island, Kamehameha returned to his
birth island. He engages in his favorite pastimes of surfing, swimming,
fishing and growing taro. He died in 1819.
25. Turn to next slide
a. Now we are going to take a short quiz to see if you payed attention. So I’m
pasting a link in the chat box, you all need to complete the quiz and you
will all be done! Ms.Orta and I will be here if you guys have any
questions!

11. Assessment: Describe how you will assess student learning (Use a combination of
formal and informal assessments)
Formal: I will use the students Jamboard collaboration and small quiz they have
completed to see how well they understood the material and content of the lesson.
Informal: During their individual work, I will then ask the class as a whole whether or not
they had enjoyed this activity and whether or not it was helpful, and if we need to revisit this
because some people don't understand, and I will go by a show of hands how many actually
understand.
