The first week at my internship site was enjoyable. I have already learned so much
working here in just my first week and I have really liked the people working here as well. As
mentioned in the discussion, I am working with The Bright House this semester. The Bright
House is a sexual assault and child advocacy center. They also have a 24-hour crisis hotline
where people can call and get advice, along with making an appointment to be seen as soon as
possible. The Bright House in Milledgeville opened in 2019 and is located on Central State
Hospital’s campus. JoAnna Smith is the director of the Milledgeville Bright House, and she has
been great to work with so far. She gives us work to do at home for extra hours if we need. We
have also been working closely with Shelly Watson whose job title is to be the victim’s
“advocate”. She helps the client fill out all necessary paperwork and sets up
interviews/counseling for them. Antoinette is the counselor at the Bright House. If a victim needs
recurring counseling services, they will see Antoinette. Lastly, Ashley is the forensic interviewer,
which means that if the client has been sexually assaulted, witnessed a crime, or anything in that
vicinity, Ashley will interview them while DFACS/the police watch in another room. Ashley
will try to get the most information possible out of the client so that multiple people are not
I get along very well with the other interns, and we have productive shifts together. Since
the office can be slow at times, we created a system where we switch off who is answering the
phones, answering the door, sitting with clients, etc. throughout the day. In addition, children
who are being seen at The Bright House cannot be left alone. So, if the parent leaves the room to
do paperwork, an intern will typically go sit in the lobby to accompany the children. Most kids
will love to talk about their favorite toys and TV shows, but some kids are upset and do not
understand why they are at the Bright House and just want to sit in silence. This week, we did
online trainings. These trainings include things such as mandated reporter training, cultural
competency training, etc. Overall, I had a great first week and am very exciting to continue
learning more about how the center runs and being as helpful as possible.

On Monday, I did not go to my internship site because of the Martin Luther King Jr.
holiday and the Bright House was also closed that day as well. On Tuesday, I worked with the
other interns to clean and organize some things around the office, along with answering the
phones and doing whatever our supervisor told us she needed us to do. On Wednesday, I came in
and did some trainings. I also sat with a little girl in the interview room and helped her draw
some fun pictures while the interviewer was taking a break. She kept wanting to draw a “silly
face” and lots of elephants. She also let me draw with her in the few minutes I sat in there.
Thursday was a slow day and there was not much that the staff needed me to do, so I just
answered the phone and cleaned when necessary for the most part of the day. I also watched a
couple of the recorded interviews to learn more about what goes into them. I wrote down any
questions I had and asked Ashley, who is the forensic interviewer here. It is great being here
because while we are not legally allowed to do much, they still want us to learn as much as we
can, so Ashley happily answered all my questions and told me I am welcome to ask more
anytime. Friday was also a slow day, so I spent a lot of time doing trainings. This week I
completed the “Building a Blueprint for Child Protection” and “The Juxtaposition of Silence,
Sexual Violence and Youth of Color” trainings along with a few others. Most of the trainings
they give us allow us to learn how to act appropriately when put in an uncomfortable situation. A
lot of them deal with what goes into being a mandated reporter, along with some explaining what
to say if a child is disclosing information to you that puts them in any kind of danger. I forgot to
mention this in my journal last week, but we did a training on cultural competency, and I feel

This week was slow for the most part at the Bright House. There were not a ton of
interviews or counseling sessions scheduled for this week, but on Wednesday there was a group
of four girls who came in together that took up a large portion of the day. Two of those girls
were a bit older but they have mental delays which made interviewing them a bit more difficult
according to Ashley. Therefore, I sat with all four of the girls who came in while they were in the
lobby or whenever Ashley needed to take a break from interviewing them. They were all very
sweet and it broke my heart to see them needing assistance from the Bright House. I had never
seen so many people (agents) in the office at once. Typically, either a detective or DFACS will
be in the office during an interview (just one or the other). But since there were two adult victims
Adult Protective Services, DFACS, and a detective were in the office for the case.
At the beginning of the week, the other interns and I had a busy day. We were assigned to
organize all the cables running from the computers into bundles and then connect all of those
small bundles into a large one. The purpose of this was to make everything look neat and
professional but also help the staff find things easier when they are trying to pull out a specific
cord. It was honestly a bit frustrating as we did it incorrectly a couple of times and then had to
redo it. We were confused on what they wanted us to be doing, but once we understood the
assignment it was not too difficult. It only took us around an hour or two to get all the cables
organized in the office, so we felt a little proud of ourselves for doing it quickly.
On Friday, the staff all went to their biweekly meeting with the police and DFACS, so the
other interns and I stayed at the office to answer the phones and make sure no one showed up
since there were no appointments scheduled during that time. One client did show up although
and we were very confused as to why they were there, so we called Antoinette. Turns out that the
client’s appointment was scheduled for the next Friday, and they just got confused on the dates.

We did not have much to do this week again at the Bright House. There were no
interviews scheduled for this week, so we just helped Antoinette with her counseling
appointments. There is normally at least one or two therapy sessions scheduled each day – give
or take there being more or none some days. Whenever counseling appointments come in, all the
interns must do is just greet them at the door and tell Antoinette that they arrived and show them
where they can sit. After she is done with the session, she will walk them out of the office and
then we clean the lobby once they leave and sanitize everything to prevent spreading COVID if
For our internship project, Avery Kerstine and I talked to JoAnna about anything they
needed to be done for a long-term project idea. She told us that we could update the resource
manual and make sure everything was still correct in it. She also said that they will need digital
flyers for awareness months/days. For example, during bullying prevention month they will post
informational flyers with statistics and things like that. We decided that Avery will do the
resource manual and I will be working on the flyers. I enjoy graphic design and would like to
improve my skills, so I feel like this will be a fun project for me.
On another note, JoAnna came to tell me that they are in the early stages of planning a 5k
run. She asked me to investigate businesses/people who will typically sponsor 5ks or races in
general in Milledgeville. So, I did that and emailed her a list of businesses that I thought would
be willing to sponsor the race. She also asked me to begin thinking of names for the race because
her and the other women working there were struggling coming up with a name. There is still
plenty of time to come up with the name and advertise the race since it is not happening until
April I believe. It should be a lot of fun and I am hoping that I will be able to attend and run as
well.

This week I began to think about what kind of designs I would like to do for the digital
flyers for my project. I have been researching about different awareness months and if there
would be any that would apply to children while I would still be working at my internship site.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, so I am going to begin making some
informational flyers about that next week most likely so I am to get a head start and they will
have plenty to post during that month. While I will not be here for long in May, May is
Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month. I am very passionate about mental health
awareness, so I am excited to make some flyers for that as well and help spread information on
how to have a healthy mind and better mental health for children. Once I get the hang of making
these flyers, I am going to record a tutorial on how to create them to include in my project
Last week I wrote about how there is going to be a 5k run that the Bright House will be
hosting. We have continued to look for eligible sponsors and have also been brainstorming
names for the race but have not decided on one yet. The interns and I also created some updated
flyers to put in the bathrooms around the office for people who may just be here for counseling
or therapy. The flyers give information on what it means to be sexually assaulted (because some
people do not even know they are being assaulted) along with the crisis line phone number and
Besides brainstorming different creative ideas for the flyers and 5k race, I did my typical
duties of answering the phones, greeting clients, and filing/scanning paperwork into the system.
There were no forensic interviews this week, so I did not have to sit with any clients while they
took a break from interviewing. I also made some more of the hygiene bags that I made a couple
of weeks ago, we still had plenty but there have been so many donations that we are beginning to

This week there was one forensic interview for the Bright House. It was a very young girl
who came in. They did not tell us about the details for this case, most likely just because they
forgot to. She came in on Tuesday for her interview and she is coming back Monday I believe
for a follow up interview. I sat with her while they took a break from interviewing and while
they spoke with her mother and got paperwork from her. She loved playing with all the Barbies
that we have at the Bright House. We just got a huge donation of toys, so we threw away the old
Barbies since they were very used and beginning to look bad.
Besides the one forensic interview, the rest of the appointments for the week were
counseling appointments. All I am expected to do for these appointments is just greet the client,
tell Antionette that her appointment has arrived, and clean the lobby once they leave. And that is
only if the appointments are in person of course, which only two or three of them were this week,
so I did not have to do much on that front. It is nice to be able to greet the clients coming in for
counseling appointments just so I get a little bit of socialization outside of talking to my co-
interns or supervisors.
I made a poster this week for National Childhood Abuse Prevention Month (which is in
April), and I was very proud of how it turned out considering it was my first poster I had made
for them. I also made a poster that included warning signs that a child might be a victim of
abuse. The other interns and I also made some flyers to put in the bathrooms at the Bright House
and around public bathrooms in the community with information to get help if someone is a
victim along with the crisis line number. We added the little strips on the bottom of the flyer with
the number on it so people could just rip it off the sheet if they wanted to. I am struggling a little
bit creatively on thinking of designs and information to put on the flyers, but overall I am having
a positive experience making them because I enjoy looking at the end product and feel proud of
myself for creating a flyer with important information that is also nice to look at.

I had a good week this past week at the Bright House. We had two forensic interviews
this week, which is more than we have been having the past few weeks, so I had something to
do. I played with a little girl who came in for counseling on Tuesday and she loved playing with
all the toys. I am expected to observe their behavior and report anything I may find odd about
their behavior to Antoinette. An example of this could be if she was overly aggressive towards
On Saturday, Ashleigh came in to deal with an acute exam. This basically means it was
an emergency and they needed a medical exam before Wednesday (which is the day exams are
performed). She was here until 2 in the morning dealing with that, and the girl was supposed to
come in Wednesday for a forensic interview. I got to the Bright House Wednesday morning and
Ashleigh informed me that the girl had run away. Her mom apparently knew where she was and
used police to help and get her back for the interview. I am unsure of if the police ended up
helping or not, but they did show up on time together for the interview. I sat with her while
Ashleigh took a break from interviewing, and she was very sweet.
Besides that, it was a typical week of scanning paperwork into the system and answering
the phones. I did do a deep clean of the medical exam room because Ashleigh was unsure of how
much the nurse cleaned after being here that late on Saturday. It was an odd week because
Shelly, who is the victim advocate at the Bright House, was out all week. I was unsure of why,
but she came in on Friday to bring everyone coffee and it turned out that she had appendicitis
I am continuing to learn many different things at the Bright House, mostly by watching, but I am
still learning how to deal with sensitive subjects which has always been an issue for me. I can

There was a forensic interview this week for a 3-year-old boy. He was very cute, and it
was a sad case to learn about. I first got the chance to meet him when Ashleigh took a break from
interviewing him. I went in the interview room and tried to talk to him, and he said absolutely
nothing. I asked him if he like the ninja turtles since he was wearing a teenage mutant ninja
turtles t-shirt and he nodded his head. It was odd though, because after he was done with his
interview, I played with him in the lobby for around 20 minutes while the detective talked to his
mom, and he was speaking a bit more. I understand this could just be because he was 3 years old,
but most 3-year-olds are very talkative even if it is gibberish. The interview was only around 15
minutes long which is extremely short for a forensic interview. Ashleigh explained that because
he is so young, forensic interviews are basically a legal formality and the medical exam is where
On Tuesday, the other interns and I had to take all 9 of the goldfish out of the large tank
in Shelley’s office. We took them to the greenway river and let them be free. After that we
emptied all the water out of the tank and cleaned it. Shelley asked me to research some different
animals we could possibly put in the tank. I was thinking a lizard or chameleon would be popular
with kids. We spilled some of the tank water on ourselves and it did not smell great at all, so they
believe she came in twice this week possibly. Ashleigh has been keeping track of our hours and
giving us tasks to do. Besides the one interview for this week and cleaning out the fish tank
(which took a solid few hours), I did my typical tasks of answering the phones, cleaning when
clients leave, answering the door, etc. I had a good week, and I am still enjoying my time here.

On Monday, Ashleigh was out of the office so there were no forensic interview

They have been pretty busy with paperwork this week, so that is most likely why because they
On Thursday, JoAnna (my supervisor) and I went to the Sex [Ed] festival and tabled. We

us we saved her life. I knew the work that is done here is important, but it shows you how much
On Thursday evening, the crisis line got a call that three children needed to come in for
an interview and medical exam. Ashleigh was out again on Friday, so I am assuming the forensic
interviews will be pushed to next week. The medical exams were conducted and since there were
three children it took a while for them to be finished. I played with them when they were sitting
in the lobby for about three hours. There was two little girls and one little boy. They loved all the
toys we had. They also loved dumping entire bins of the toys everywhere, which is fine. But I
was also thinking of how I am the one who will clean it up. Of course, there are more important
things going on, so I never say anything at all about the mess they make, I just continue to play
with them.
Overall, it was a good week. I am continuing to work on my posters for my project and
plan on recording the tutorial for it soon. I am going to do trainings online for hours over spring

up doing next week. I also tried to get as many hours as possible this week in case I am unable to

This week I did not go into my internship in person at the Bright House. I was cleared by my

I watched an interesting presentation from the National Children’s Advocacy Center on forensic

This week was good at the Bright House. There was an interview on Tuesday and that was the
only interview for the week. The interviewee was a victim of sex trafficking, so there were many different
people in the office that day. I believe there were two detectives when there is normally only one, and
there was a forensic interviewer who came from the Hampton office. Ashleigh would normally do the
forensic interviews, but she was the advocate for this case, so she was not allowed to do the interview.
This was by far the case that has affected me the most. It made me sick to think about what the client has
been through and opened my eyes that trafficking rings are going on in our community, which is
terrifying.
Counseling appointments were around the same as they are any typical week except for
Wednesday. On Wednesday, there were no appointments or medical exams, so it was a very chill day in
the office, so I just focused on organizing things around the office along with doing a deep clean.
I completed a few trainings this week. One of them was “Development Considerations for Forensic
Interviewers” and while I am not a forensic interviewer, it was still an interesting training to complete. I
find forensic interviews to be very interesting because of how meticulously they are carried out. There is
a strategy behind every question the interviewer asks in those interviews – and it is also good to learn how
to be more sympathetic and try to understand what they are feeling. Another training I completed was
“Fractures in Infants and Children: Abuse, Accident, or Brittle Bones?”. This training was the most
applicable to the career I am wanting to enter that I have done so far. The presenter explained how
different injuries will look depending on how they happened and how to be able to tell the difference.

There was a forensic interview on Wednesday and Friday. I did not know much about the cases
that came in, and I also did not end up sitting with either of the clients those days. One of the other interns
did. On Friday, before the interview happened, I watched a documentary with my co-workers that they
will be speaking on at Georgia College next week. It was called “I am Evidence” and it was about how
the police system fails victims of rape due to how many untested rape kits have been found sitting in
storage areas collecting dust. It was a very interesting documentary, but it was also one that made me
incredibly angry. Once the rape kits were beginning to get tested due to protests and lobbyists begging
them to, they finally began testing them and were able to connect the DNA from the rape crimes to many
I answered the phone a lot this week, for some reason we had more calls than usual coming to the
office. I spent a lot of this week working on my E-portfolio website because I do not want to procrastinate
and rush the process of creating it. I know next week will be very busy for me, so I am trying to keep
staying on track and stay ahead with my assignments! I also started creating an outline for my
presentation and created parts of the PowerPoint to present but I have not gotten very far on that yet. I am
planning on recording the Canva tutorial on how to make the posters maybe sometime next week. It
depends on how far I get on the rest of the project, but it is quite difficult to start working on the E-

On Monday, there was an interview scheduled but it was not able to happen because the police
department did not have a detective available to come for the interview. This was odd and frustrating for
my co-workers because this interview had been scheduled for several days and the family showed up and
was unable to have their interview done. It is supposed to be rescheduled, but I am unsure of when it will
happen now.
On Tuesday, I was at the office with Antionette for most of the day because JoAnna went to a
court case and Ashleigh spoke at Georgia College to a class about the documentary I mentioned last
week. I am glad that they let me watch the documentary with them, because I did not realize how terrible
the statistics were on testing rape kits and now, I am more educated on the subject.
On Wednesday and Thursday, it was just Antionette and I in the office together because
Ashleigh, Shelley, and JoAnna all went to watch the murder trial in court. They suggested that I read
about the case, because I had never heard about it happening even though I lived in Milledgeville when
the murder happened. There was a podcast done on it, so I listened to it and read a few articles on the
case. It was sad to read what had happened, but it is cool to me that my co-workers get to go sit in on a

This week was slow at The Bright House. We had a multi-disciplinary meeting on Tuesday,
which are usually not held at The Bright House but were this week. We did not have any forensic
interviews and this week also seemed a bit slower than usual for counseling appointments. I spent this
week working on my Electronic Portfolio along with finishing up my reflection paper. I am planning on
presenting my project on April 21st around 9:30 AM. I am anxious to present to my supervisor and co-
workers because I would like to impress them. Since they did not have many options for us to do for
projects, I have worked really hard to make my poster project substantial and to have a lot of meaning
behind it. I truly believe that my posters can help people that are just scrolling on Instagram. If they did
not know there was a sexual assault center in Milledgeville or a crisis line they could call, maybe my
poster would be informative for them and would be able to help them have access to resources to get help.
In addition to my original project plans, I am also creating informational posters to place around the
community about human trafficking. I am planning on placing the posters Tuesday after I leave The
Bright House.
On Friday, I helped JoAnna and Ashleigh place pinwheels at the Exchange Bank in front of the
mall for Child Abuse Prevention – since April is the awareness month for that. We also closed early on
Friday at noon for Good Friday, so instead of going in I went to help do the pinwheels at 9AM and then

This week was not too busy at The Bright House. We did have one interview this week. When I
had some free time at my internship, I spent most of the week putting some finishing touches on my
project for my presentation which I had Thursday. It was hard to formulate how I wanted to present my
project, because I can understand how someone could look at hear about it and think it is not going to
make a huge impact. I know that it will make an impact, which is why I chose it, so it was important to
me to convey its importance while presenting. Social media has a huge impact on most everyone’s lives
and I know that when I see certain statistics or appealing posters, it does make me learn something and
I have been working on my E-portfolio for a couple of weeks now. It is difficult to make
everything look very neat and organized on the website because I am not super tech savvy and Weebly
does glitch a lot for me at least. I have worked very hard on it and am excited for you to see that work as
well.
I was very nervous about presenting my project to you along with my supervisor and co-workers
because I have been working very hard on it and wanted you all to see that. I enjoyed working on this
project because it was honestly a fun and interesting project to do while also learning more about this
field by researching statistics to include on the posters. My supervisor and co-workers were very
impressed and asked me to send them all the posters I had done so that they could print them out and put
them around the office along with the ones that will be posted on social media.
It is hard to believe that this is the last journal that I will be writing. I have gotten into such a
habit of writing them at the end of the week that I am sure I will still be documenting what I did for the
week for my own keepings. I had a great semester at The Bright House and am very thankful for them
taking me in and making me feel welcome here. I will miss seeing them every day!
