BEHAVIOUR AND STRENGTH OF BOLTED CONNECTIONS FAILING IN SHEAR

– Matthew D. Elliott, Lip H. Teh, Aziz Ahmed

The net and gross shear planes in the design specifications are known as not giving the most
accurate results. In addition to these planes, new two shear planes are compared to giving most
accurate results in this article. They are “the effective shear plane” and “Kamtekar’s shear
plane”. Kamtekar’s shear plane is different from all other shear planes because it is not related
to the bolt hole diameter, it related to bolt diameter. Kamtekar’s shear plane coincides with
the gross shear plane for bolted connection without hole clearance. So it overestimate the
ultimate capacity. For oversize hole clearance , it underestimate the capacity. The effective
shear plane gives more accurate results because it is not depends on hole clearances.
