‘Ans. The shoemaker had a white beard,
raggedly cut, but not very long, a hollow face
and very big eyes.His yellow rags of shirt lay
‘open at the throat and showed his withered
and worned out body.He himself along with
his old canvas frock, loose stockings and
tattered clothes had faded and turned yellow
being away from sunlight and air for a long
time.
5. How has the writer described the place
where the shoemaker had been settled
down?What does it tell us about his present
state?
‘Ans. The place where the shoemaker had
been settled down is the garret whichnis
dark and gloomy being closed and not
allowing the sunlight to let in. On a bench
was the shoemaker sitting with an
‘unfurnished shoe upon his lap and his tools
and scraps of leather at his feet.
This shows that though the shoemaker had
been set free from the prison yet he couldn't
break the chains that had tied up his mind.
He stil believed that he was in the prison
and had been continuing his job of
shoemaking,6. How did the shoemaker react to more light
in the room?
Ans. When more light entered the room, the
shoemaker put his hand between his eyes
and the light so that his eyes did not get
suddenly exposed to light which he had not
seen for many days
7.Why do you think he reacted the way he
did?
Ans. He reacted in that way as he had been
confined in the dark prison for many years
and had lost his association with light. Even
in the garret he stayed in darkness
continuing his work.
8.Who was the visitor? Who else had come
along with him?
‘Ans. Mr. Lorry, an old friend of the
shoemaker and the shoemaker's daughter
had come to meet him.9. What did Defarge ask the shoemaker to
tell Mr. Lorry?
Ans. Defarge asked the shoemaker to tell Mr.
Lorry about the shoe that he was working
upon and give it to him as he was an expert
and knew everything about a well made shoe
when he would see one.

shoemaker?
Ans.Upon taking the shoe from the
shoemaker, Mr.Lorry asked him about the
shoe and the name of the shoemaker.
