Anthropological Perspective of the Self Output

Crazy Rich Asians

1. What is the movie all about? Who are the main characters in the
movie?
• The film Crazy Rich Asians is about love, tradition, beliefs, family, and
cultural identity. Nick Young and Rachel Chu are the main characters.
2. How are culture, beliefs, traditions, and values shown/presented in
the movie? How do they affect the personalities of the main
characters?
 Rachel chose a blue and white dress in the scene, but her mother
insisted that she wear a red dress because in Chinese culture, red
dresses represent good luck, prosperity, and joy. Furthermore, when
Nick’s family gathers around the table to make a dumpling. In China,
especially around Chinese New Year, it is customary for families to
gather and make dumplings. The shape of a Chinese dumpling is similar
to that of ancient gold or silver ingots, which represent prosperity and
wealth. It has an effect on her in such a way that she feels she has to be
feminine in front of others just to satisfy them.
3. Who among the characters in the movie you can most relate with?
Explain.
• I believe it is Rachel because she sacrifices her happiness and self-
realization for Nick’s family’s sake. And if I were her, I would do the same
thing because I don’t want to ruin a family for my happiness or
contentment. I also do anything just to make my lover to be happy even
though I am not the reason behind it.
4. What is your overall impression of the movie? Discuss.
 The film is realistic, and the cast is superb. There are no dull
scenes in this film. I would like to recommend it to my friends and
family.
