Today we are going to review introductions and making small talk, beginning
conversations. We will also review present continuous verbs. Let's review introductions. This is how we
introduce two friends.
Let's look at how we introduce people more formally. Remember for formal introductions we use
people's titles.

When there are two people of equal status, we introduce the lady first.
Professor Smith, this is Professor Jones. It's nice to meet you, professor Jones.
Let's work on introducing yourself. This is how we introduce ourselves among friends.
Let's review question words. I want everyone to give me one question word as an example.

I want you to ask one question. Remember you will be using these kinds of questions for a new
conversation. To begin a conversation with someone you don't know.
Small talk is the kind of conversation we have when we don't know a person. Usually it includes talking
about the weather or the place and often we ask questions. This kind of talk creates conversation with
the person.
Oh, that's very interesting. We can talk about this some more.
Nice to meet you, Kate. So, Kate, where are you from?
Oh, yes…
So you can see how questions can lead to conversation. This is what we call small talk.

Now you remember how to make introductions and you're beginning to understand how to do small
talk to create conversations with someone you don't know. So, at this point let's review present
continuous. Remember the present continuous is used in the present tense, but it shows that the action
is continuing. Present continuous is used for action that is being done. to be ___ ing
Notice that there are two verbs in this tense. Only the first one changes, the second one stays the same.
I am doing this.
He is doing this.
Here is what the present continuous tense looks like in the negative form.

Let's practice in a different way. I will give you a sentence and you complete it with the present
continuous tense.

Dr. Rock is going to the conference this weekend. He is giving a talk there. He is meeting his professor
friends at the conference. They are talking about the new problems. Dr. Rock is coming home next
Monday.
Ms. Stein and Mr. Lucas are going to a conference this weekend. Their jobs are marketing specialists.
Ms. Stein works for Adidas and Mr. Lucas works for Puma. They are going to a talk by the famous
marketing consultant, Leo Jones. They are also going to a cocktail at the hotel. Nike is giving the cocktail.
They are meeting many other people there and they can talk with old and new friends. Let's read the
dialogue between Ms. Stein and Mr. Lucas.

Now we can see that perhaps Mr. Lucas and Ms. Stein are going to learn about each other. Maybe
