Rogers
Carl Rogers was born on January 8, 1902, in a small suburb of Oak

Park, Illinois right outside of Chicago.

the fourth of six children of Walter and Julia Cushing Rogers

Walter and Julia Rogers were both devoutly religious

When Rogers was 12, the family moved to a farm where he developed a

strong interest in nature

Rogers pursue an Agricultural Major in University of Wisconsin, but he

became more interested in religion.


During his 3rd year, he was deeply involved with religious activities.

His travel in China for 6 months, helped him to have a liberal thinking and

become independent from the religious views of his parent

In 1924, he entered the Union Theological Seminary in New York, while in

seminary he enrolled in several psychology and education courses.

He was influenced by the progressive education of John Dewey


He served as a fellow at the new Institute for Child Guidance in New York

City and continued to work there while completing his doctoral degree

Rogers received his Ph.D. in clinical and educational psychology in 1931

from Teachers College of Columbia University.

He spent nine years at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to

Children, working with delinquent and disadvantaged youngsters

In 1935 he wrote his first book "The Clinical Treatment of the Problem

Child

In 1942, he published "Counseling and Psychotherapy"

that in some respect, he or she is prized and in
others not.
Unconditional Positive Regard
where parents, significant others, accepts and
loves the person for what he or she is. The
consequence of unconditional positive regard, is
that the person feels free to try things out and
make mistakes, even though this may lead to
getting is worse at times.
Fully Funtioning Persons
Such a person experiences in the present, with immediacy.

He is able to live in his feelings and reactions of the

moment. He is not bound by the structure of his past

learnings, but these are a present resource for him insofar

as they relate to the experience of the moment. He lives

freely, subjectively, in an existential confrontation of this

moment in life
An openness to and a freshness of appreciation
of, all experience;
