Climate change is already affecting millions of people throughout the world, and it will continue
to do so. Urban regions, which often have dense people and structures, are particularly vulnerable.

Climate change continues to affect the urban areas and increase the vulnerability with the rising
of sea levels, flooding, and more frequent and stronger weather events (Mias-Mamonong & Flores,
2010). Due to urbanization and with the involvement of climate change, flooding in urban areas
increases in occurrence and intensity.

With the direct relation of urbanization to the degradation of environmental quality, water, air,
and noise quality are often affected (Cullis et al., 2019). Increase in population also increases the usage
of these resources and often neglect the aftermath.

Planning of land use and infrastructure in advance is essential for the development, with
population rapidly growing (Mishra, Mebeelo, Chakraborty, Kumar, & Gautam, 2021). Extensive planning
increases the rate of successful sustainability of urbanization projects.

Urbanization is an inevitable trend that cities are becoming exposed and vulnerable to the
effects of a wide range of disasters. As such, rural-urban migration occurs to the fact urban cities have
more opportunities to offer (Mariz, Mara, & Ryan, 2019).

Davao City is the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area, with a total of 2,444 square
kilometers. (NEDA, n.d.). As the population increases, Davao City residents experience disasters due to
development in urbanization and its negative impact to the environment.

This study will utilize the well-known theory and phenomenon of the greenhouse effect, which
was proposed by the physicist John Tyndall back in 1859. Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxides
are examples of greenhouse gases. These gases are known as greenhouse gases, and they function as a
thick blanket around the Earth (Blagojević, Nagy, Lukić, & Tešić, 2020).

The process of urbanization is a big contributor to the unnecessary increase of these greenhouse
gases which causes major damage to ozone layer of the atmosphere. This damage leads to the drastic
warming of our planet and causes climates to change all around the globe.

Urbanization is indeed not fully wicked because it offers significant benefits to people. More
than half of the world's population lives in cities, resulting in economic, cultural, and societal
development. Many cities and towns all around the world face issues such as a lack of jobs,
homelessness, and rising squatter settlements, insufficient services and infrastructure, poor health and
educational services, and excessive pollution levels. (Scott, J., 2015).

Rapid and uncontrolled urbanization, as stated by Dumlao, T. A. (2014), will almost certainly
result in a further reduction in quality of life, increased environmental degradation, increased
greenhouse gas emissions, social stress, and political unrest in places like Manila, Philippines.

According to Claudio Acioly Jr. and Junefe Gilig Payot (2005). Davao is one of the Philippines' and
Asia's most prominent cities. With a population of around 1.3 million, it is increasingly experiencing
rapid urbanization, with 71 percent of the people living in cities.

According to Jose Ma, Lorenzo Tan, Davao City, along with Cebu and Iloilo, is among the high-
risk metropolitan centers when it comes to the effects of climate change. According to him, Davao
should begin to examine steps to mitigate the effects of such hazards because it is the entrance to the
Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines growth area.

According to the WWF Philippines website, the Business Risk Assessment and the Management
of Climate Change Impacts report aims to provide a realistic understanding of city-specific business
vulnerabilities and risks. Davao City has a tropical climate with warm days and cool nights. Sunny days
are always followed by rainy nights. There have been no significant seasonal fluctuations in the typhoon
belt. It is a yearly event (PAG-ASA, 2019).
