Day 2 Lesson Plan
Objectives: Students will be able to identify the compass rose, symbols, and the
map key as three different characteristics of maps.
Materials:
Compass (Physical or Online)
Large map of the world with a compass rose (for reference)
Large map of the United States (for reference)
Desk size maps of the state of Florida (one for each group of students)
Matching Cards with each side of the compass rose as well as the symbols.
Handout of an enlarged map key with compass rose and symbols for
mountains, rivers, lakes, towns, roads, etc. (one for each student)
Paper, pencil, crayons, markers
Procedures:
Before starting the lesson the teacher should introduce the topic that will
continue from the first day of lesson, a more in depth look at maps and the
symbols that can be seen on a map. Ask students what they know about maps
including how they are used, where they might be found, and what they have on
them. At this point the teacher should activate background knowledge of the
students before handing out anything, pointing to the large world map that is
placed in the classroom and pointing specifically at the compass rose and any
symbols that may show up on the map. At this point the teachers should ask the
students as a whole if anyone knows what the name of the compass rose is, if no
one answers the teacher should explain what the compass rose is and what each
side represents.
After explaining the cardinal rose and seeing where they are at this point of
the lesson, the teacher will pull out the large maps of the state of Florida, the
matching cards, and the individual handouts. The teacher will begin with the
matching cards that have a picture of each head of the compass rose and the
symbols, and their matching pair has the definitions. The teacher will lay out
the pictures but in their hand we'll have the definitions, the teacher will read out
each definition and have the students answer which one they think it is. After
giving the students ample time to answer the teacher will put in the correct
place and explained the definition.
After the matching cards the students will be separated into small groups, at
each of the small groups they will start with the large map of the state of
Florida. To start students will try to identify where we are on the map and what
is near us; For example if we are in Orlando there are a few lakes and towns
around us. They should then look at the handout and try to label using the
correct symbols what they think is on the map. They will discuss this in their
small groups and form their own version of a map based on their location and
everything around them.
After each group has finish their own map they will present it in front of the
classroom and explain the symbols and what is on their map.
Evaluation: After this lesson to check for each individual students understanding,
the teacher can provide a blank map that has just roads, and each student is able to
freely make their own map using the different symbols that we learned as well as
adding a compass rose with the correct labels.
Another way to evaluate the students is to have them just label the compass rose on
their handout as well as asking the student to name an object from where they are
in that direction; for example asking the student to name an object “West” of
them.
