A little bit of backstory here. | am not a heavy book reader. | voluntarily don't read for entertainment. In fact prior to this project, ve only been forced to read for leisure in the past by my parents. | usually read to study or research, no in between. I'm only stating this to give an insight of my personality and how it affected my initial thoughts on the book. At first, | was disinterested in reading this book or any one to be sincere. ERG can confirm | wasn’t looking forward to carrying on with this project. | was furious at the project from the get go. The idea of being forced to read a book didn’t sit right with me. However, one of the most random things happened. | opened the book and flipped through it and to my surprise found mathematical equations and theories. | was hooked at first sight. | was immediately interested in the book. My alacrity was unprecedented and still surprises me when | recall. Besides the intriguing math that lured me into the book, | thought the book was weird. It was titled The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. | was genuinely befuddled and couldn't wait to see how math would be implemented in the plot. And | must state, I wasn’t let down after reading the book. The beginning of the first chapter of the book was just as weird, unique and outright intriguing. Who starts a book with chapter 2? Then Chapter 3, chapter 5, 7, 11?1 hope yall caught on what Mark did there. However, back on track, only six sentences into the book and the “dog” was mentioned dead. | don't know about you all but that was more than enough to get readers hooked. Mark Haddon is one heck of a writer, the quality of his writing is simply brilliant. 1 sincerely enjoyed reading its entirety. When I first read this book back in 2019, | wasn’t exactly stoked to have such a boring-looking book in my hands. | figured it would just be another pathetic attempt to be unique with a literary perspective, but it actually did really well. | enjoyed it so much that | actually wrote an essay on the psychology of Christopher for fun. You guys really hit the nail on the head with how most people are gonna feel when reading th ‘We're gonna go into more depth with the book now, so spoilers ahead! (You can skip ahead if you wanna experience it all for yourself.) Middle (Analysis): The host will guide the transitions. Everyone should be responding in these sections!! Not just one person does the whole thing. Chosen focus: plot What is it? The plot is really a boy uncover 5-6 minutes the mysteries around him. First he wants to find the mystery of who killed the dog he likes, then he uncovers that his mother is alive and seeks refuge in her and her new family from his father, the person that killed the dog. Why does it matter? This matters because it adds a sort of chaotic sense to the story, the way Christopher writes is what is in his mind. So we see a constant dropping of interest from one plot to another. 1 Key moments from the text where the plot is relevant (MLA citations): “" like dogs” -Christopher(Haddon 3) This is highly relevant because of how his brain works. He is on the spectrum and his feelings are exacerbated or diminished. His feelings towards dogs help motivate him to find the killer, leading us down the path he takes, uncovering many more underlying secrets. Is this moment a mirror, window or sliding glass door for you? Mirror, for me personally I like dogs. | genuinely like them and enjoy their presence. So when others hurt them it’s difficult for me to standby and watch. Questi What made the plot special for you? Was it the perspective or the fact that it rapidly changes at the climax of the story? Answer: Definitely the perspective and narrating. | feel like just the story alone is kind of boring, but it’s instantly made hundreds of imes better when you tell it through Chris’ words. Answer: It was definitely the change in the climax. | like there was never one peak of when the story got exciting. Answer: | believe that Mark is writing from a first-person perspective as Chi magic. Chris's perspective amplified the unique story. | can’t recall how many times | thought Chris was Mark and not a fictional character. Chosen focus: Character 5-6 minutes Who i about it? The character that I'll be talking s Christopher. Why do they matter in the story? Well | mean he is the main character, there would be no story without him. 1 Key moments from the text that i important for their character development (MLA citations): I decided that | was going to find out who killed Wellington even though Father had told me to stay out of other people's business, Pg 38(Haddon) Is this moment a window, mirror, or sliding glass door for you? Why? This is a mirror for me because if it was me would've done the same thing. | don’t like others' mistakes being pinned on me either so | would figure out who did whatever the misdeed was. Question: How does the author/illustrator reveal the character? (Look at what the character does, Answer: Mark Haddon introduces Chris through his mind, which is both extremely broad and extremely narrow. It makes for a really cool contrast that allows the reader to interpret the world instead of having it be told to them. ‘Answer: Mark reveals Chris through different \cluding explanation of thoughts and emotions, and description of experiences Chris's been through whilst the main story continues. He also revealed Chris's behaviours through events as they occur. What is it? The Curious Incident of the Dog in the ‘Night-Time was written from a first person of view and that person being fopher Boone. Christopher Boone was the autistic son of Frederick Ed Boone and Judy Boone, He narrated the entirety of the book. Mark Haddon wrote from Chris's perspective so effortlessly well readers would almost forget it was a fictional story-at least | felt that way. Christopher gave an account of how he had met the said dog and what occurred afterwards. He'd shed light into his personality and life in general. Gradually working his way with character development. This point of view affords Haddon the opportunity to tell the story without losing out in describing the unique personality of Chris. Why does it matter: The point of vi of the story matters because it greatly improved the captivating characteristic of the book. Contrary to what the title suggests, Chris was actually the main character of the story rather than the dog. His, point of view gives readers a very strong insight of what is going on in his head. 1 Key moments from the text that is important for this (MLA Citations): -An example of this is when Chris explains how he interprets human emotions using visual depiction. On page 2 chapter 3, He stated: “Eight years ago, when | first met Siobhan, she showed me this picture... ..(The picture was a basic round face like in emojis with a sad mouth posture) Chris continued: and | knew that it meant "sad," which is what | felt when | found the dead dog” This was a moment where the author Mark, utilized Chris's first person point of view to establish his character as an autictic boy. Another paramount example of a key moment is when Chris explains his inner convictions and thoughts that would have been impossible to tell from any other point of view or by any other character. This occurred often in the book. ON page 125, chapter 173, Chris expressed: “People say that Orion is called Orion because Orion was a hunter and the constellation looks like a hunter with a club and a bow and arrow, like this (There was a picture of the coveted constellation) But this is really silly because it is just stars, and you could join up the dots in any way you wanted, and you could make it look like a lady with an umbrella who is waving, or the coffeemaker which Mrs, Shears has, which is from italy, with a handle and steam coming out, or like a dinosaur.” Chris added a diagram of the dinosaur he conjured from stars. This is a prime example of how making the narrator and employing his point of view improved the story overall Is this moment a window, mirror, or sliding glass door for you? Why? It is mostly a mirror because we are able to see things and comprehend them from Chris's perspective. However, depending on one’s personal experiences, there might be some mirrors or glass doors. Personally 1 could totally relate to Chris's take on making different images off the stars because | used to when | was very much younger. Question: Were there any mirror moments in Chris's narration of the story to you? Like moments that reflected your personal experiences? Answer: Sometimes | feel a bit overwhelmed when there are people around me, but other than that | don’t really relate to Chris’ experiences. Answer: Sometimes I'm scared to go on the train like him. | just don’t like public scenarios with people | am not familiar worth. Though his social anxiety is way worse than mine, it does sort of reflect an experience of mine. Answer: No not really. Hosts should create 2-3 final fun questions to ask their guests! Wrap up question 1: Answer: I think | like Siobhan and wouldn't I know we didn’t get much in terms of character in this book, but who do you guys think is your favorite character, or who do you wanna see more of? mind a story about how she ended up working at the special school. Answer: Personally, I'd want to see some more of the other special needs Chris reacts to them is interesting. ids. The way Wrap up question 2: If you could take Chris as a character and put him into any setting or plot, what would you they interact. Answer: I'd be soooo down to see Chr fantasy kind of thing, having him super over-analyze magic or stuff like that. Areview of the book. Would you recommend this book to others? Why? Markis a super intelligent writer and used his experiences with autistics individuals dexterously writing this book. ‘A recommendation or two for people who fed the book. What else would they like? | feel that if you loved this book you could also like the book series named “A series of Unfortunate Events.” It is a series of mystery novels where three orphan’s house are burned down killing their parents resulting in their sole guardian wanting to kill them and take their inheritance. We follow them escape time and time again running away fro their evil uncle, along the way we are put into many mysterious situations which involved a school who has underlying secrets.
