A new report on life in 2020 was published yesterday. This report predicts big changes, not just
in technology but also changes in the way we live. These are some of the predictions:
- One in five fathers will be househusbands, while the mothers go out to work.
- People will live near other people who have the same interests, for example, in golf villages.
- There will often be three generations-grandparents, parents and children- living in the same
house.
- People will live until their mid-eighties, but women will still live slightly longer than men.
- One in five school classes will be online through the Internet. Students will also often have
video classes with a “superteacher” from another city or country.
- Most workers will have short-term contracts. They will have to learn to do lots of different
jobs because they will change jobs frequently.
- Most people will work a twenty-five-hour week. This will usually mean working five hours a
day, although some people may work three eight-hour days and have four days off.
1. 20% of fathers will stay at home and take care of their children. …………
2. People will live near other people who like the same things. …………
3. Men and women will live until they are 80. …………

Dear Mai,
I’m very pleased that we’re going to be pen pals. I’ll tell you a little about myself, and you
can do the same when you write to me.
I live in an area of London called Maida Vale. It’s quite near the centre, but there are parks
nearby where I often take my dog, Mickey, for a walk. I live with my parents and my younger
brother, Paul. My father works for the post office and my mother has a part-time job as a nurse.
I go to the local comprehensive school, where I have a lot of friends. I like most subjects, but
not all of them! In the evening I sometimes visit friends or stay at home and listen to music,
and at the weekends I like going swimming or horse-riding.
At the moment I’m working very hard because I have exams soon, so I’m spending a lot of
time in the library.
Best wishes,
Mary

Read the passage, then answer the questions below (2.5pts)
Are you looking for a cheap, clean, effective source of power that doesn't cause
pollution or waste natural resources? Look no further than solar energy from the Sun.
At present, most of our electricity comes from the use of coal and gas, oid or nuclear
power. This power could be provided by the Sun. One percent of the solar energy that reaches
the Earth is enough to provide power for the total population.
Many countries are already using solar energy. Solar panels are placed on the roofs of a
house and the Sun's energy is used to heat water. The energy can be stored for a number of
days, so on cloudy days you can use solar energy, too.
Sweden has an advanced solar energy program. There, all buildings will be heated by
solar energy and cars will use solar power instead of gas by the year 2015.
Questions:
1. Is solar energy an efficient source of power?
2. Where are the solar panels placed?
3. How long can the solar energy be stored?
4. When will cars use solar power instead of gas in Sweden?
5. Is the solar energy used in Vietnam now?

Thomas A. Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11 th, 1847. His family moved
to Port Huron, Michigan, when he was seven years old. Surprisingly, he attended school for
only two months. His mother, a former teacher, taught him a few things, but Thomas was
mostly self-educated. His natural curiosity led him to start experimenting at a young age.
Thomas Alve Edison lit up the world with his invention of the electric light. Although
the electric light seems to be the most useful, it was not his only invention. He also invented the
record player, the motion picture camera, and over 1,200 other things. About every two weeks
he created something new.
He worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes he worked so intensely that his wife
had reminded him to sleep and eat.
Thomas Edison died at the age of 84 on October 18 th , 1931, at his estate in West

The environment is everything around us, both natural and made by man. The biggest
problem in the world today is the destruction of the natural environment. This is a complicated
problem. We burn fuel, and this causes air pollution. We throw away plastic bags, containing
toys and other objects. These stay in the environment, they are not like paper or wood that
slowly disappear. We have made thousands of new chemicals. Factories that make or use
chemicals always have chemical wastes. These are often poisonous, and they also stay in the
environment. Since 1945 some countries have been testing nuclear bombs in the air and
underground. These explosions in the air cause nuclear fall-out. The fall-out causes cancer and
kills animals and people. Nuclear power plants that make electricity also produce dangerous
wastes and have accidents that can be very disastrous.

Nuclear power plants that make electricity also produce dangerous
wastes and have accidents that can be very disastrous.

alternative.
However, many people do not approve of using nuclear power because it is very
