Introduction: What did we build?

Goals

● Successfully build an infrared sensor alarm circuit…

(we combined several pre-designed circuits/ideas)
● Include blinking red LED
● Include green “ready” LED
● Be able to control the volume of the buzzer w/
potentiometer
● Incorporate/learn about monostable timer
Basic Circuit
Infrared LED and Photodiode

● Simple answer:
infrared LED = emits infrared light
photodiode = tiny solar panel

● In circuit = acts like a switch

Timer
Multisim Schematic
Final Demonstration
(now that we know
what is happening)
Improvements:

● Infrared laser (so distance can be longer)

○ Tripwire?
● Oscillating buzzer
● Use variable capacitor to adjust alarm duration
What we learned (course objectives):
1. We used A LOT of different types of circuit pieces to build various circuit parts:
a. LEDs and photodiode
b. Transistors
c. Capacitors
d. Timer (monostable)
e. Op-amp (comparator)
f. Potentiometers
g. Relay
2. Used Elvis Board and multimeter A LOT in debugging
3. Teamwork! (makes the dream work)
4. Stewardship
a. Sensor = Security (type of thing you see in homes)
b. Practicality with LEDs (steady green LED vs. flashing red LED communicates important details)
