The book Frankenstein is a book that goes over a creation and its hurt.

As the creation

goes through its journey throughout the book a lot of questions can be asked and a lot of opinions

can be made. The main question we are going to focus on is what makes the creation a human,

monster, or something else, and why. The simple answer to that is the creation is a monster

because of its dangerous actions, its appearance, and the lack of control of itself.

The first reason the creation is considered a monster is because of its dangerous actions.

There are many definitions regarding what a monster is but the main definition is “ Monsters are

very often depicted as dangerous and aggressive with a strange, grotesque appearance that causes

terror and fear”. The creation grew up with no one to teach him anything and he has naturally

taught himself to react in violent ways. Even though the creation's intentions were never bad it

could never help itself to stay away from violence and it's simply because it's a monster. “ The

murderous mark of the fiends graspuas on her neck, and the breath had ceased to issue from her

lips” (chapter 23 page 183). This quote shows the monster taking revenge on victor by choosing

violence and killing victor's wife. This is not the only violent act the monster has made. “ The

child still struggled, and loaded me with epithets which carried despair to my heart; I grasped his

throat to silence him, and in a moment he lay dead at my feet… my enemy is not invulnerable;

this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall torment and destroy him”

(chapter 16 page 130). This quote is once again showing the creation's violent acts but it also

shows his mindset. The creation will get as violent as it needs to just for revenge. This is a very

monstrous act and mindset

The second reason the creation is considered a monster is because of its physical

appearance. Once again the main definition of a monster is “ Monsters are very often depicted as

dangerous and aggressive with a strange, grotesque appearance that causes terror and fear”. The
creation is known to be quite scary, big, and funny looking. “ Accursed creator! Why did you

form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust… my form is a filthy type of

yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance” (chapter 15). This quote is showing that

even the creation feels as if its looks are ugly. The creation describes its looks as “horrid” and

that itself is enough to be considered a monster. “ I persuaded myself that when they should

become acquainted with my admiration of their virtues, they would be compassionate to me, and

overlook my personal deformity” (chapter 15). The creation is trying to use its personality to

overcome its looks as it understands it is a monster but wants to be treated otherwise.

The third reason the creation is considered a monster is because of its lack of self control.

The monster claims he never wanted to take the route he took by killing all of these innocent

bystanders but says he had no choice. “ I, like the arch-fiend, bore a hell within me, and finding

myself unsympathised with, wished to tear up the trees, spread havoc and destruction around me,

and then to have sat down and enjoyed the ruin”(chapter 16). The monster is explaining how

there's a “bore hell” within him so he naturally does bad things without being able to control

himself. “ the mildness of my nature had fled, and all within me was turned to gall and

bitterness” ( chapter 16). The creature is showing monster tendencies as he can not control

himself turning bitter as he is just so mad at the world.

Although some may argue that the creation is human because of its ability to show

emotions, however this is totally wrong. “ I am an unfortunate and deserted creature, I look

around and I have no relation or friend upon earth… I am full of fears, for if I fail there, i am an

outcast in the world forever” (chapter 15). The creation is expressing his emotions to De Lacy

but understands that since no one wants relations with a monster, it will have nothing in this

world forever. This shows the creations accepting that it's a monster but still just wanting those
relationships that it sees the humans have.

In conclusion the creation is considered a monster. Just because you have good intentions

will not change that. Your actions and your looks are what determines if you're a monster or not.

In this case the creation has monstrous acts throughout the whole book and looks like a monster

as well. Self control is important as well and the creation has shown that it does not have self

control.
