It has been established that love at first sight in the literal sense is an impossibility. If we
consider love at first sight in the figurative sense it becomes a possibility. Though love at first
sight cannot exist in the literal sense, perhaps it exists in the figurative sense. First of all, in
Romeo and Juliet, Romeo says, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, For I ne’er saw
true beauty till this night”(Act I sc. v line 59-60). Romeo didn’t literally fall in love then and
there. Romeo is speaking figuratively. Lastly, also in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo said, “What
lady’s that which doth enrich the hand Of yonder knight”(Act I sc. v line 48-49)? Rome is not
being literal here. You cannot literally look at someone and fall in love with them instantly.
Although some may argue that love at first sight happen instantaneously, “...we must concede
that love at first sight is not really love at first sight”(Cohen). As Cohen states, love takes time to
manifest. In summation, love cannot exist in the literal sense, but it is possible in the figurative
sense.
