What is Organised Crime? Organised crime is an illegal act committed by two or more criminals jointly in an organised manner. There is no universally accepted definition of Organised crime. Dr. Walter Reckless- “organised crime is an unlawful misadventure which is ‘carried on by the boss, his lieutenants and operators who form a_ hierarchical structure for a specified period’. Sellin- “organised crime resembles those economic adventures or enterprises which are organised to carry on illegal activities”. Criminal Rackets * Providing service to people who are engaged in some legal business activities © These services is a systematic extortion by threatening to injure someone or damage his property © Illegal exploitation for some legitimate or illegitimate demand e E.g Labour racketeers, gambling racketeers, etc. 4. Political Graft ° Highstatus persons are believed to have connections with professional criminals * For obtaining political power engage persons to commit crime ® Eg: hiring professional offenders for buying votes.
