Signify and Boston University have

validated the effectiveness of our light
sources on inactivating the virus that
causes COVID-19

The team applied a dose of 5mJ/cm2, resulting in a reduction

of the SARS-CoV-2 virus of 99% in 6 seconds. Based on the
data, it was determined that a dose of 22mJ/cm2 will result in
a reduction of 99.9999% in 25 seconds.2
1. What you should know about UV-C
The basics explained
What is UV light?
Ultraviolet (UV) light is invisible to human eyes.
It can be subdivided into three categories:

UV-A (from 315 to 400 nm)

• For use with curing, sun tanning and insect
traps.

UV-B (from 280 to 315 nm)

• For medical use (i.e. phototherapy to treat
skin conditions, including psoriasis).

UV-C (from 200 to 280 nm)

• For disinfection purposes and
germicidal application.
How does it work?
• UV-C radiation can break the DNA and RNA of
bacteria, viruses and spores, meaning that they
leave them harmless. There are no known
micro-organisms resistant to UVC.1
• UV-C technology has been used safely and
effectively in hospitals and governmental
buildings for more than 40 years2
• Most UV-C solutions utilize conventional
lighting, with LED now improving in efficiency
• The peak output of our germicidal lamps
(253.7nm) is close to the maximum
effectiveness of UV-C (265nm)

Releases” Pg. 56
Effectiveness of disinfection with UV-C determined by two main factors: dosage and environment

Dosage = Irradiance x time* (J/m²)

Each pathogen has its own characteristic.
Some pathogens need higher dosage to be inactivated than others

SARS-Cov-2* needs dose

> 290 J/m² to inactivate with 99.999% (5-log reduction)
> 220 J/m² to inactivate with 99.99% (4-log reduction)

Other pathogens need higher or lower dose (see table)

SARS-Cov-2 needs relatively low dose to be inactivated

SARS-CoV-2, responsible for COVID-19, is not the only harmful microorganism

Most common microorganisms in the Indoor Spaces :

Norovirus (stomach flu):

• Causing gastroenteritis – inflammation of the intestines.
• Norovirus is highly contagious and is spread through contact with
contaminated water, food and surfaces.

Staphylococcus aureus:
• Bacteria usually found on the skin and in the respiratory tract.
• Can easily spread onto surfaces which come into contact with skin, (e.g.
desks, door handles, keyboards).
• Can cause a range of illnesses, from minor skin infections to life-threatening
diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis and osteomyelitis.

Influenza
• Influenza is highly contagious and is spread through airborne droplets
caused by the sneezing / coughing of an infected person, or by encountering
contaminated surfaces containing these droplets.

How has UVGI been used in the past?
Upper-room UVGI has been used for over 70 years to eliminate
airborne pathogens. Since 1950, the bulk of the research on
upper-room UVGI systems focused on controlling the spread of
tuberculosis (TB).

How was UV-C
used in the past
to disinfect upper air?
How was UV-C light used in the past? A brief history..

In the 1930s and 1940s, William F. Wells, a Harvard

University sanitary engineer, made a significant stride
in the knowledge and application of UV-C light for
disinfection by proving its effectiveness in killing
airborne microorganisms.
Society’s increasing faith in antibiotics and other
advanced cleaning agents slowed the development of
UV-C technology until the 1970s and 1980s when it
was learned that germs were evolving resistances.
The spread of the Covid-19 virus demonstrated this.
Today, upper air/room systems are installed in
spaces, such as above patient beds and in waiting
rooms, corridors and break areas in facilities ranging
from schools, to hospitals, to international airports. Wells applied his knowledge by installing upper-room UV
lamps in suburban Philadelphia day schools to combat the
spread of measles and compared infection rates to schools
without UV-C. The schools without UV-C saw a 53.6 percent
infection rate, while the schools with the lamps saw a 13.3
percent infection rate.
This is a significant result, given there are other means of
contamination (direct)
How does upper air
disinfection really work?
What type of indoor air pollutants do exist?

Non-living particles, such as

particles coming from automotive
traffic

Living particles, such as bacteria’s

and viruses

Viruses have the smallest particle size.

Gas (VOC’s) from outside air as well
as from inside human activity or
building materials such as paint.
Three ways for Air disinfection

The air in buildings often contains health menacing bacteria and viruses. To reduce disease transmission,
the air can be disinfected in three ways: dilution, filtration, and purification by ultraviolet germicidal
irradiation (UVGI) or UV-C.

Dilution reduces the concentration of

infectious agents by pulling in fresh air
from outside and extracting the
contaminated air from the occupied
space.

Filtration reduces the concentration of

infectious agents by passing the air
through high-efficiency air filters that
trap bacteria and viruses, removing them
from circulation.

Purifying the air destroys infectious

agents by exposing them to UV-C energy
which damages their DNA. This damage
stops them from replicating.
Upper Air : Disinfect the upper part of the room with UV-C radiation.
• This method is also called
zone irradiation or upper air
irradiation.

• Infectious particles typically

move from the lower part of a
room to the germicidal zone in
the upper room.
• Natural or mechanical
ventilation within rooms ensures
that the contaminated room-air
passes through the UV-C zone
and will be disinfected.
• Inactivation occurs through the
cumulative effect of exposure
over time as infectious particles
are carried repeatedly to the
upper room.
• Each pass inactivates the
infectious particles until their
concentration in the lower part
of the room are effectively
diluted.
• It can create a germicidal zone
with UV rays that is strictly
confined to the upper part of a
room, leaving the lower part of
the room within safe radiation
levels

3. How does the UVGI System Inactivate airborne infectious droplet nuclei

Humidity Levels within air-conditioned buildings are

typically lower than outside which allows viruses to
evaporate faster thus creating more droplet nuclei.
Lower humidity in buildings allows droplet nuclei to
stay airborne longer as the droplets do not absorb
water weight which cause them to fall to the ground.
Indoor air currents created by both HVAC systems and
people movement assure that droplet nuclei can remain
airborne for a very long time.
This allows HVAC systems to redistribute droplet
nuclei throughout the building to infect more

The Need For UVGI For HVAC

Sick Building Operational Eco-Friendly

Syndrome Efficiency Cleaning
• UV-C inactivates • Prevents bio-film • Keeps the coil
and prevents formation/ growth clean avoiding the
growth of mold reducing the use of chemicals
and bacteria on pressure drop and for cleaning
the coil/ drain improving heat
within AHU transfer efficiency

So, What Happens?
Organic Matter Lowers Coil Eff. / Increases Coil ΔP
New Clean Coil:

Optimum
cooling /

~54° WB

Add only .006”

of bio film:

Decreased
= efficiency
~58° WB

a) Cooling performance goes down

b) Fouling leads to corrosion
c) Lifespan will reduce
Note : Biofilm-free fins will be less susceptible to retain dusts and potentially corrosive compounds, as well as the moisture that activates the corrosion effect.
Siegel, Jeffrey, I. Walker & M. Sherman. 2002. “Dirty Air Conditioners: Energy Implications of Coil Fouling” Submitted to the 2002 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings.
Siegel, Jeffrey A. and W.W. Nazaroff. 2002. “Modeling Particle Deposition on HVAC Heat Exchangers.” Submitted to the Indoor Air 2002 conference.
Siegel, Jeffrey and I.S. Walker. 2001. “Deposition of Biological Aerosols on HVAC Heat Exchangers.”
Why Cooling coil Cleaning ?
• Environment of AHU systems can promote the growth of
bacteria and mold-containing biofilms.
• Cooling coil section are particularly susceptible because of
condensation and carryover of moisture from coil fins.
• Cooling coil fouling by biofilms increase coil pressure drop
and reduce airflow and heat exchange.

Mechanical & Chemical Cleaning

Methods Don’t Always Work
• Chemical and mechanical cleaning can be costly
• Vapors from cleaning agents can contribute to poor
air quality
• Chemical runoff contributes to groundwater
contamination
• Mechanical cleaning can reduce component life.
4. Various Guidelines for UV Germicidal Irradiation

ASHRAE
UVC can be applied to HVAC systems, typically in air-handling units, to complement conventional system maintenance procedures (Bahnfleth 2011) and
has been shown to be effective in reducing airside pressure drop and increasing air-side heat transfer coefficient of wetted cooling coils (Bahnfleth 2017). A
large dose can be delivered to a stationary surface with a low UVC irradiance because of the essentially infinite exposure time, making it relatively easy to
cost-effectively prevent the growth of bacteria and mold on system components. In contrast to air disinfection irradiance levels, which may exceed 1000
μW/cm2, coil surface irradiance levels on the order of 1 μW/cm2 can be effective (Kowalski 2009), although 50 to 100 μW/cm2 is more typical. Using
reflectors to focus lamp output on surfaces may reduce the power required for surface treatment, but at the expense of reducing air treatment
effectiveness. Potential advantages of UVC surface treatment include keeping surfaces clean continuously rather than periodically restoring fouled
surfaces, no use of chemicals, lower maintenance cost, and potentially better HVAC system performance.

ISHRAE[1]
The other two options available for exhaust air treatment being UV irradiation and heating. MER Darnell et al. [16] observed that, an exposure time of
45min at a temperature of 75 °C resulted in complete inactivation of SARS-CoV. Similarly, an UVC (254 nm wavelength) irradiation with an exposure time of
15 minutes at irradiation intensity of 4016 µW/Cm2 resulted in complete inactivation of SARS-CoV.

UVGI Rating Value[2]

To evaluate the effectiveness of UVGI systems, a UVGI rating value (URV) has been created
(W. J. Kowalski & Dunn, 2006). These ratings are to be used with UVGI systems designed in
AHUs or other in-duct applications where levels of irradiation are substantial. “Systems like
those used for microbial growth control, or upper air systems, may use much lower values
than 100 µW/cm2 , and URV ratings do not apply to these systems” (W. J. Kowalski, 2006,
243). Table 4.1 summarizes the UVGI rating values as well as the UVGI doses needed to
obtain desired disinfection efficiencies

8. WHY PHILIPS UVGI SYSTEM
o Effective Coil Cleaning
• With irradiance levels well above ASHRAE handbook for all configurations (from 20cm to 90cm)
• UV-C is known for its effectiveness on all known pathogens[5] and the Philips UV-C light sources have also been proven to be
effective in inactivating the SARS COV2 virus which causes COVID-19 [3]
o Effective Air Disinfection Inside AHU
• Able to achieve the ISHRAE and URV suggested dosage of >4000 µW/cm2 in 3 air passes [2]
o Better Comfort
• Coil disinfection prevents biofilm accumulation on fins resulting in effective heat transfer with better temperature and
humidity control.[1]
o Energy Savings
• Maintaining a coil free of microbial growth improves coil heat transfer efficiency and leads to a reduction in pressure drop by
>20% resulting in a corresponding reduction in energy consumption due to improved air flow and reduction in fan energy as
against no use of UVGI
• Maximized coil heat transfer efficiency and reduce energy consumption can result into projected energy savings of up to 15%[4]
o Reduced Maintenance Costs, Less Downtime and Ground Water Pollution
• UV energy ensures the cooling coil always remains clean, eliminating costly coil cleaning maintenance and reducing system
downtime.
o 35 Years Of Experience And Leadership in UV Technology
o Best System Compatibility With In-House Lamp, Ballast and Controller
