1. Good models are complex. What’s more, a good model should

include both
moderating and mediating variables. Discuss this
statement, applying it to Business
Analytics and Research
Methods

2. Why is it important to consider basic research design issues

before conducting the
study and even as early as at the time of
formulating the research question?

answered this

Complexity in the model does not decide whether the model is

good or bad. In fact,
there is no relationship between the
complexity and the quality of the model. A
model may be good when
it is simple or may be good when it is complex. While
constructing
a model when we use sound theory, it will definitely lead to good
one.
Now we have a question in mind that “which type of sound
theory?” A theory or a
clearly explained relationships which used
to build the model or which are used in
the model defines the
theoretical framework. A model is generally a framework
which
consist of number of variables and the relationship among the
variables. A
good Framework consists of specific and relevant
variables to the problem.

A good model should include both moderating and mediating

variables. This
statement is not always true. Moderating and
mediating variables may or may not
be important to the problem. A
good model may include a mediating variables not
necessarily
include moderating or it may include moderating variable not
mediating.
It’s all depend upon the problem in which we are
working. There are different
variables like dependent, independent,
moderating and mediating.

Some of the proposed solution may not solve the problem for
everybody or in any
situation. A mediating Variable explains a
relationship between independent variable
and the dependent
variable. It bridges the gap between them.

But the Moderating variable explains on what conditions an

independent variable is
related to dependent variable.

Mediating and moderating variables are shown graphically.

Below in example 1, moderating variable managerial

expertise is shown as in the
organization workforce diversity
(Independent variable) leads to the organizational
effectiveness
(dependent variable) but on what conditions? This answer is
explained
here by the moderating variable.

In example 2, Mediating Variable Creating strategy is

shown, it works as a mediator
between two variables.
When we develop a model these variable may be or may not be
included according
the problem situations. If all the relationships
are clear defined, we may not in need
of theses variables. Hence,
the necessity of including them into the model is depend
only on
the problem situation.
