Plate Tectonics
Q1. Draw a line to match the pictures of boundaries with its correct descriptions.

In Divergent boundary new

crust is generated as the plates
pull away from each other

Convergent boundary is when

crust is destroyed as one plate
goes underneath the other

In Transform boundary crust is

neither made or destroyed as
two plate pass by each other
horizontally

Q2. Read the paragraph carefully and answer the given questions below.

We can divide layers of earth further into mechanical layers starting from the Lithosphere is the
outermost layer of the earth which contains the entire crust second layer is asthenosphere contains
the same materials as the top layers of the mantle but the pressure and the heat are increased it's
not exactly a liquid but it does move like heated rock.

In 19th century a scientist named Alfred Wegener notice that the coastlines of several continents
look like they fit together similar to puzzle pieces he believed that around 200 million years ago all
the continents were joined together in one

large supercontinent that over the course of millions of years Pangaea broke apart into the
continents we know today. This process of breaking is called continental drift.
The plate tectonics theory states that the Earth's outer mechanical layer the lithosphere is divided
into large continent-sized plates that are constantly moving slowly around one to two inches per
year according to the plate tectonics theory these massive lithospheric plates are all moving in
different ways and how they interact with one another can have a huge impact on the earth where
these plates meet are called boundaries.

There are three kinds of boundaries convergent boundaries, Transform boundary and Divergent
boundary
Volcanoes and mountains form at convergent boundaries earthquakes and tsunamis can occur at
both convergent and transform boundaries fishers and large cracks in the surface occur when two
plates move apart in divergent boundary.

1. Name the two mechanical layers of Earth.

Lithosphere and asthenosphere

2. What is Wegner’s Tectonic Theory?

The plate tectonics theory states that the Earth's outer mechanical layer the lithosphere is
divided into large continent-sized plates that are constantly moving slowly around one to two
inches per year according to the plate tectonics theory these massive lithospheric plates are all
moving in different ways and how they interact with one another can have a huge impact on
the earth where these plates meet are called boundaries.

3. What is the effect of the movement of Tectonic plates on earth?

Volcanoes and mountains form at convergent boundaries earthquakes and tsunamis can occur
at both convergent and transform boundaries fishers and large cracks in the surface occur when
two plates move apart in divergent boundary.
