Ở Việt Nam, UNICEF bảo vệ quyền trẻ em, tập trung vào những người nghèo
nhất và thiệt thòi nhất.

Ngày nay, nhiều trẻ em ở Việt Nam được hưởng cuộc sống chất lượng mà thế hệ
đi trước không bao giờ có thể hình dung ra. Tuy nhiên, vẫn còn trẻ em và người
chưa thành niên bị bỏ lại phía sau bởi tác động của sự phát triển kinh tế xã hội
năng động này và tiếp tục sống trong điều kiện thiếu thốn và bị loại ra ngoài.
Những chênh lệch ngày càng tăng này bị ảnh hưởng bởi sắc tộc, giới tính, quê
quán và khuyết tật. Nghĩa là 1% trẻ em (khoảng 5,5 triệu) bị thiếu thốn ít nhất
trong 2 lĩnh vực: giáo dục, y tế, dinh dưỡng, nơi ở, nước và vệ sinh môi trường,
hoặc hòa nhập xã hội. Nhận thức được những thách thức này, Chính phủ Việt
