Lesson #3: 11/10/2021 Nuts and Bolts for your Future

Comet Culture Lesson 2021-2022

This lesson is intended to make sure that CHS students are aware of the steps they should be taking
toward their future goals. We hope to give students concrete tasks to complete to help them with
college searches, job searches and understanding non-college options after high school.

BEFORE THE LESSON:

Make sure you know how to get to Naviance and How to join the CHS School Counseling Schoology
group. (STEPS: CHS School Counseling Group on Schoology, Resources on Left side, 1 st link is Naviance)

Check what grade level you have—there are some slides in the beginning that deal with specific grade
levels

Open the Power Point on one tab and open a second tab for the quizziz game (joinmyquiz.com, game
code is 10738465)

Materials:

Each student will need a piece of paper and a writing utensil.

Slide-by-Slide Directions:

Slide 1: Read the Lesson Topic and Objective

Slide 2: Discuss that there are lots of options after high school. List each and express to students this is
their decision.

Slides 3-6: Go to the slide that pertains to the class you are teaching. If a mixed grade class, you will
review multiple slides. Discuss each step. PAUSE to have students join the CHS counseling group on
schoology (especially Freshman classes).

Slide 7: Reiterate options and the idea of knowing your career goal and working backward to determine
your post-high school preparation. Call out each option one-by-one to see if students have friends or
family who went to: college, military, trade school or straight to a career.

Slide 8: Describe the application process for 2 and 4 year colleges.

Slide 9: Things to consider during the college search

Slide 10: Application deadlines: stress that applications should be submitted by fall of your senior year

Slide 11: Frequently Asked Questions: press enter to advance through each frequently asked question
and the answer.

Slide 12: CCBC College Promise program details—free college AFTER graduation. This program is ever-
changing so interested students should be directed to their counselor.

Slide 13: Highlighting companies that hire students right out of college with benefits
Slide 14: See if students can name 2-3 careers that begin with apprenticeships instead of college (click to
show answers). Explain that apprenticeships are PAID trainings, which require applications, that
typically last 4-5 years and lead to skilled careers.

Slide 15: See if students can name all 5 branches of the military, then describe the different levels of
service (see slide)

Slide 16: Read through next steps for students interested in the military after high school.

Slide 17: Activity---students need to number their paper #1-5 and answer the questions on the slide

Slide 18: Emphasize working backward from the job you want to determine the best way to prepare
after high school

Slide 19: Activity—have each student write down the name of their counselor and their counselor’s
email address

Slide 20: Do this now—strategy #1: register for a more challenging course level if you can handle it

Slide 21: Do this now-strategy #2: Determine your strengths-read the two options and discuss the
strengths profiler if anyone in class has completed it in Naviance. To take the ASVAB, students would
sign up with student services.

Slide 22: Have a student read why they should have a resume, ask students to raise their hand if they
have ever created a resume for themselves.

Slide 23: Hover over the screen to press the play arrow to watch video about the parts of a resume (2
mins)

Slide 24: Activity: Have students fold their paper in half lengthwise, then widthwise to make 4
quadrants. Students should darken the lines into quadrants and then label them any of the four that
they can fill in. Possible Quadrant titles include Work Experience, Volunteer Experience, Skills,
Extracurricular Activities, Honors and Awards, Education.

**If the student has NO work experiences, volunteer experiences or Extracurricular activities, you may
want to ask them about Interests, but also note that this is an eye-opening activity that could point out
the need to start trying new things.

Slide 25: Student brainstorming: think about and write down experiences in each of their sections,
including position titles, dates and responsibilities

Slide 26: Show two examples of resumes. Point out that both have contact info, summary, education,
work experience and skills sections

Slide 27: Highlight possible templates for starting to create the resume. If you have time, you can go to
MS word, new, templates, resume to show them available templates

Slide 28: READ ALOUD the universal Do’s and Don’ts of Resume writing

Slide 29: Review an example of the summary section, which goes at the top of your resume after your
contact information
Slide 30: Review an example of how to list your education when you haven’t yet graduated from high
school.

Slide 31: What if I don’t have any skills??? Instruct students to use www.typingtest.com or a similar
typing test to determine your typing speed, then list your speed as a skill, review other options for
typical teen skills

(you can have students do this if there is time left after playing Quizziz)

Slide 32: Quizziz game...project game by opening a separate tab, go to joinmyquiz.com and entering
the code 10738465 and play as a class. Comet Culture leaders should call on people or let the class call
out answers to wrap up the lesson.

Slide 33: To wrap up the lesson, have each student say or write down two steps that they can take
immediately to help them in their post-high school life

*If time at the end of the lesson: have students go to typingtest.com to determine their typing speed OR
describe your own plan for after CHS with the class.
