cooling environments

Instructions and format for submitting the assignment:

Name: Roll Number:

Aim: To study the effect of turning process parameters on surface roughness under minimum
quantity lubrication environment.

Equipment used:
(i) Lathe (Make: Pinacho; Model: SC 200 x 750)
(ii) Minimum quantity lubrication setup (Make: Kenco)
(iii) Surface roughness tester (Make: Ziess; Model:Surfcom flex)

Tools and tool holder used:

(i) PVD AlTiN carbide tool insert

(ii) PCLNR 2020K12 tool holder

Specifications of MQL setup:

Spray type : External Jet Mist Spray.

Reservoir Capacity : 3 Litres
Tank Type : Non-Pressurized
Operating Source : Compressed Air Supply
Working Air Pressure : 1.5 kg/cm2 to 3 kg/cm2
Maximum Inlet Pressure : 10.5kg/cm2
Air consumption at Max 3 kg/cm2 : 1.2 CFM (ideal condition)
Type of Lubricant : Water based soluble Coolant / Mist oil.
Lubricant /Coolant Consumption : 50 ml/hr to 1.5 litre/hr
Lubricant Controlling : Control screw on Nozzle Block

Cutting fluid used: Synthetic cutting oil (HP KOOLKUT 40)

Procedure: (Write the detailed procedure for conducting the experiments)

Results and Discussion:

(Write your observations and justifications for the results obtained.)

Table 1: Effect of spindle speed on surface roughness under dry machining and MQL
environments:

Plot the graphs for spindle speed vs surface roughens (Ra) for dry machining and MQL
environments.

Include the image of the chips collected at different cutting conditions at dry and MQL
environments and write your observations regarding the chips collected.

Include the images of the crater wear and flank wear of the tool inset observed under optical
microscope.

Conclusions:

Answer the following questions:

1. Explain briefly about minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) with a schematic diagram.
2. Explain briefly about the following tools.
(i) PCLNR2020 K 12 tool holder
(ii) CNMG120404 RP tool insert
3. Write about various categories of cutting fluids used during machining.
