1. Te-form
- Making requests Te-form + ください
- Giving or asking for permission Te-form + もいいです（か）
- Prohibition Te-form + は ＋ いけません
- Connecting 2 or more activities Te-form + Verb ます

A. ru-verb

食べる → 食べて 見る → 見て

れんしゅう： おきる → ねる →

B. u-verb

a. With final う、つ & る

b. With final む、ぶ & ぬ

よむ → よんで

2. Making requests Te-form +ください

おきる ＋ ください → おきて ください

よむ ＋ ください → よんで ください

3. Giving or Asking for Permission : Te-Form ＋もいいです（か）

テレビを見る → テレビを見てもいいです。 You may watch TV.

コーヒーを飲む → コーヒーを飲んでもいいです。 You may drink coffee.

Q: 教科書を見てもいいですか。 May I see the textbook?

A(1): はい、見てもいいですよ。／いいですよ。／どうぞ。

A(2): いいえ。／すみません、ちょっと・・・。

4. Prohibition : Te-Form ＋ はいけません。

クラスでねてはいけません！

*〜てはいけません means a strong prohibition. We will learn a softer expression in Lesson 8.

**The prohibition sentence can be used for a reply when someone asks for a permission.
However, it will sound rather harsh unless you are in a position of authority (e.g. parents, teacher,
etc.)

学生：あさごはんを食べませんでした。クラスで食べてもいいですか。

先生：クラスで食べてはいけません！！！
5. Descring Two Activities : Combining two or more verbs

1st Verb (Te-Form) + 2nd Verb (Tense, Affirmative/Negative)

A. Sequence of events or actions.

ノートを借 りて、コピーします。 I will borrow her notebook and
photocopy it.
お べんきょう
今日は六時に起 きて、 勉 強 しました。 Today I got up at six and studied.
い ひる はん
マクドナルドに行 って、昼 ご飯 を食べましょう。Let’s go to McDonald and
have lunch.

B. Describing the manner of the actions

1stVerb (Te-Form) + 2nd Verb (Tense, Affirmative/Negative)

電話を使って、写真をとります。 I take a photo with my phone. (I use my
phone to take a photo.)

C. Describing the situations (for apology)

1st Verb (Te-Form) + すみません。

Situation/Reason

教科書を忘れて、すみません。 I am sorry for not bringing in the textbook.
(I left the book at home, and I am sorry.)

おくれて、すみません。 I am sorry for being late.

(I am late, and I am sorry.)
6. “Because” : 〜から

（Situations）。（Explanation）から。

こんばんべんきょう
私は今 晩 勉 強 します。あしたテストがありますから。
I will study this evening. (Because) we will have an exam tomorrow.
たか
バスにのりましょう。タクシーは高いですから。
Let’s go by bus. (Because) taxis are expensive.

7. Offering assistance : 〜ましょうか。

喫茶店でコーヒーを飲みましょうか。 Shall we have some coffee at a café?

Offering assistance:

（私が）やりましょうか。 I’ll do it. (Shall I do it?)
