Comparative Rhetorical Analysis

The first motivational speaker I chose to analyze is Mel Robbins.

Mel Robbins was born in Kansas City Missouri on October 6th in

1968. She is a lawyer, author, tv host, and motivational speaker. She

is known for her book The 5 second rule and her coverage of the

George Zimmerman trail for CNN. She speaks about how to make

your life happier and more fulfilled. I will be analyzing her website, instagram, and one

of her speeches The 5 second rule.

The second motivational speaker I chose to analyze is Dani Johnson. Dani

Johnson is a bestselling author, motivational speaker, and radio/tv host. She speaks

about relationships and finance. I will be analyzing her website, instagram, and one of

her speeches 4 things my first mentor told me that changed my

life.

In Mel Robbins speech, 5 second rule, she uses emotional

phrases such as “you are a pain” to help get her point across.

She uses this terminology to play into the audience's emotions

which helps lead into the 5 second rule speech about how this rule can help you get

anything you want. She also uses imagery in her speech. She gives in-depth examples

about what the 5 second rule can apply to. For example, she says “you have an impulse
to walk over to someone who is successful and has built a team that could possibly help

you and you're not going to do it”. Mel Robbins: 5 Second Rule

In Dani Johnson's speech, 4 things my first mentor told me that changed my life.

She also uses imagery to help the flow of her speech about four things that can change

your life. She uses imagery by telling her story of how she first started in business and

how she was unsuccessful, had no income, ws living off of her credit card, and went into

debt. She uses direct quotations from her mentor while explaining what the 4 things are.

For example, she says “he said if you give me one opinion, I will not work with you, if

you try to tell me how to do this, I will not work with you”. 4 Things My First Mentor Told Me

That Changed My Life

On Mel Robbins website, she uses the terminology like “she’s the most-booked

female speaker for a reason” and “almost 1 million students. 99% approval rating” to

help persuade the audience to go to her shows and buy her books. She also has many

pictures of herself on her website and pictures of her holding her books with a smile.

This is to help persuade the audience by feeling a connection to Robbins by seeing her.

It also helps persuade the audience to buy her books by showing how happy she is with

the books. https://melrobbins.com

On Dani Johnson's website, she also uses word choice to help persuade the

audience. When you first open her website it says “everything you need to completely

transform your life”. It also says “personal development training to help you fast-track
living the life you want now”. This also helps persuade the audience to use her format

for changing their life. https://danijohnson.com

On Mel Robbins instagram there are a lot of quotes that point toward emotion.

She highlights one line on each quote that helps draw your attention to the quote. One

quote that stood out to me was “healing doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn't look pretty.

It isn't all rainbows and butterflies. It's in the small steps you take everyday. It's hard.

Sometimes painful. It requires patience and consistency. Keep showing up and doing

the work and your life will change”. She uses quotes that have emotion to draw the

audience in. https://www.instagram.com/melrobbins/?hl=en

Lastly, on Dani Johnson instagram she also has a lot of quotes that point toward

emotion. The first quote on her instagram is “oucs on the person you want to become,

not the mistakes from your past”. Many of her quotes on her instagram are about self

empowerment. This helps draw the audience to her instagram account by giving the

audience the sense of empowerment. https://www.instagram.com/danijohnsonlive/?

Both motivational speakers use similar rhetorical devices. Neither speaker really

stuck with me, but I did enjoy watching Mel Robbins 5 second rule speech.
