I chose this classroom to redesign because it

does not always lend itself to be used in the best
way. Some classrooms in our building are still
meant to have smaller class sizes and also
younger students. Unfortunately, we do not have
the luxury of building a new middle school yet, so
I want to try and make classrooms like these
more student friendly and updated with better
seating and technology.
About five years ago, our school was updated
with newer projectors, speakers, paint and
seating. Unfortunately, the seats that were
chosen for students are not ideal for flexible
seating and the individual seats that were bought
do not fit middle schoolers well along with their
Chromebook and also manipulatives/work space
for class. Students always ask to not sit in the
blue/gray desks because they are not comfortable
and are just too small for them.
To help improve this space, I want to try and
make this more student friendly for them to learn,
collaborate and work. I know the size of our
classrooms are limited, but maybe we can get
more student input to create learning spaces they
want to be in. I know that things will change in the
coming years, but maybe we can find more
affordable technology choices that can be easily
updated and also find more flexible seating that
will allow students to create their own
learning/seating spaces. When I asked my
students what they would like to see in an
updated classroom there were three main things:
1.) No blue/gray chairs, 2.) More high table
seating, and 3.) A water machine!

The goal of our original update is to make our

classrooms more comfortable learning spaces
and make it more like “Starbucks”. We also had
couches in our classrooms before COVID, but
now students want seating to learn and complete
work in an effective way.

the screens and classroom speakers that are already in the classroom.
