Glossary

Acrobat
Adobe Acrobat is software that converts various document formats into a form that can
be reliably displayed by any end user who has Acrobat Reader software installed on
their machine. Text and graphics are all embedded into the document. Increasingly the
format is being used in the printing industry for the safe transfer and interpretation of
designs and in other situations where layout of mixed media is important. Acrobat files
have the file extension PDF.

Antialias
Antialiasing usually refers to graphics, though applies to other media such as sound and
text. It refers to the apparent smoothing of media, which is achieved by the slight
blurring of otherwise hard edges to improve the viewing or listening experience of
digital media.

Avatar
An avatar is the icon that is the digital representation of an individual.

Bit
A ‘bit’ (from ‘Binary digIT’) is the smallest unit of information a computer can use, a
single digit number in base-2, in other words, either a 1 or 0. Eight bits make one Byte.
Bandwidth is usually measured in bits-per-second.
