Chapter 8
Please review your personal social networking sites, blogs, and websites to determine how they
may be viewed by future school district hiring committees. Please discuss any concerns you
may have about your postings.
- I don’t really have any concerns about my postings on social media, I keep all platforms
very professional.
What kinds of images, discussion topics, or other posted information might school districts be
concerned about?
- I really do not have anything that is inappropriate. I do not post anything about my beliefs
or opinions and do not think any of my photos would raise concerns from school districts.
Complete an internet search on the theme of teachers and social networking. Find out about the
current status of employers’ impressions of teacher profiles and discuss your findings.
- After reading a few school policies from various schools, most schools prohibit teachers
from communicating with parents/guardians through personal call/text, personal email, or
other personal accounts. Teachers should communicate with parents through school
email or office phone if needed. I also read a few articles with some administrators that
had previously hired teachers and stated that if a teacher chooses to have a social
media account then this should be private and students should not be able to access it in
any way. Teachers should also keep their posts appropriate and professional.
What assistance does the college or university career services office provide during a job
search?
- One of the biggest things that my university provides is job fairs for students. This is a
great way for students to meet administrators or other teachers from different school
districts around the state.
What could Lisa have done to better prepare for this interview experience?
- She could have checked over all of the important interview information before leaving
just to ensure she was headed to the right place at the right time. She could have also
made a reminder either on paper or her phone.
How does Lisa’s behavior in showing up late for the interview, even with a possibly
understandable reason, influence your perception of her as a candidate?
- Even if it was a genuine mistake she should have still looked at the information to double
check where she was going. Due to her mistake I would have perceived her as someone
who is underprepared or just ignorant.
What do you feel are the most important qualities administrators are looking for in an interview?
- I think that some of the most important qualities administrators are looking for are
someone who is prepared and confident. A person that answers questions with good
thought and appropriate responses is important as well I believe. The candidate should
also be dressed professionally to make a good impression on the people that they are
interviewing with.
