PICOT Question: In laboring women, what is the effect of using aromatherapy compared to not
using aromatherapy, on the severity of pain experienced in the first stage of labor?

Problem: first stage labor pain

AIM: Reduce numerical pain score in the first stage of labor by two 30 minutes after
nonpharmacological pain intervention.

Outcome Measures:

1. % of patients receiving nonpharmacological pain intervention with pain score reduced


by two numerical ratings 30 minutes after nonpharmacological pain intervention (# of L
& D patients in the first stage of labor with documentation of nonpharmacological pain
intervention and documentation of NPRS score reduction by two 30 minutes after
nonpharmacological pain intervention / # of L & D patients in the first stage of labor
with documentation of nonpharmacological pain intervention)

Process Measures:

1. % of patients assessed for pain in first stage of labor (# L & D patients assessed for pain
in the first stage of labor / # L & D patients in the first stage of labor)
2. % of patients with documentation of aromatherapy (# L & D patients in the first stage of
labor with documentation of aromatherapy / # L & D patients in the first stage of labor)
3. % of patients with documentation of back massage (# L & D patients in the first stage of
labor with documentation of back massage / # L & D patients in the first stage of labor)

Balance Measures:
1. % of patients with headaches from aromatherapy (# L & D patients in the first stage of
labor with headaches from aromatherapy / # L & D patients in the first stage of labor
patients with documentation of aromatherapy)
2. % of patients with bruising from back massage (# L & D patients in the first stage of
