Sex versus Beer Preference

STEP 1: State your hypotheses.

Null hypothesis, H0: eye color is not independent of hand preference.

Alternative hypothesis, H1: gender independent of beer preference.

Null hypothesis, H0: gender and academic level in college are not independent.

Alternative hypothesis, H1: gender and academic level in college are independent.

STEP 2: Set up the criteria for making a decision

 Reject null hypothesis (H0) if p-value is less than, α = .05

STEP 3: Summarize the data into the appropriate test-statistic.

A chi-square test of independence was carried out to determine whether gender and academic
level in college are independent. The relationship between the independent variable (gender)
and dependent variable (academic level in college) was significant, X2 (2, N = 25) = 6.90, p =
.032. Hence, we reject the null hypothesis since p = .032 < α = .05. Therefore, we can
conclude that gender and academic level in college are independent.

STEP 4: Evaluate H0. (Reject or Fail to reject)

Reject the null hypothesis because the p-value, p = .032 is less than the assumed level of
significance, α = .05.

Conclusion: personality type is independent of color preference.
