+ Density of ice is less than water: Dueto the

cage like structure of ice, molecules are not closely


packed and vacant spaces are left. As ice
melts, these molecules come closer and hence
the density increases. As ice being less denseryit
floats over the surface of water.

Density of water is maximumat 40C : As ice


melts, molecules come closer and hence density
increases upto 4 0C. After that the kinetic energy of
the molecules increases so they start moving away
from each other and again density starts
decreasing.
