Agriculture Problems
Bangladesh
Bangladesh after beginning having problems due to climate change, agriculture problems
has become one of the main issues for habitants of this place. This originates because of the rise
of the sea levels which cause serious problems to coastal farmers in Bangladesh inland as
These farmers had to begin to shift from growing rice to raising shrimp and other
seafood, as the salty water was flooding in their land. However, it was not easy for most families
to switch from one way of making their living to another one completely different that requires
another type of tools. "Unfortunately, this is likely to be most challenging for those farming
families who have the fewest resources to begin with," said Chen, an associate professor of
agricultural, environmental and development economics (last name). On the other hand,
switching from growing rice to raising shrimp will help Bangladesh to keep the farmers from
going out of the country since this new way of farming helps to maintain their livelihoods.
Another of the main problems this country is having is the constant loss of land due to
rising sea levels and the big amount of salty water getting into the farms producing a lot of
difficulties for farmers trying to grow rice. Now since they have lost that way of living because
of the climate change, the work has decreased, leaving many families without a job and making
Another problem the agriculture of Bangladesh faces is the decrease of job opportunities
to the community since shrimp farming offers far fewer job opportunities for daily workers than
rice growing does. Raising shrimp only needs a few people who will clean the algae and weeds
and maintain the pond, except for growing rice which is a labor-intensive operation that requires
quite a lot of people who prepare the field, transplant the seed, maintain the field and harvest it.
Leaving these two agriculture issues to the most problematic Bangladesh is having because of
climate change, making people migrate due to this situation and explore another way to make
their living.
