 What is Data Mining?
• Data mining (knowledge discovery from data) is extraction of
non‐trivial, implicit, previously unknown and potentially useful and
understandable patterns or knowledge from huge amount of data.

• Interchangeable names used to refer to Data Mining:

• Business Intelligence
• Knowledge discovery (mining) in databases (KDD),
• Knowledge extraction,
• data/pattern analysis, data archeology, data dredging,
information harvesting etc.
• Analytics

• Business intelligence (BI) is a set of theories, methodologies,

processes, architectures, and technologies that transform raw data
into meaningful and useful information for business purposes.
