Basic Components of Memory

Objectives:

1. Understand the general assumptions of cognitive theories.


2. Understand how cognitive theories differ from behaviorism and social cognitive theory.
3. Understand the Information Processing Model of human memory
4. Understand the role of attention and connection to prior knowledge in moving
information into long-term memory.

Activities:

In Session 2a you will:

• Read Chapter 6 on Cognitivism and the basic components of memory.


• Review the PowerPoint on the basic components of memory.
• View a video program on Memory. Follow the link provided in the Session 2a folder.
• View the Ted Talk on Attention. Follow the link provided in the Session 2a folder.
• Use the discussion tool to interact with fellow classmates to discuss the role of
“attention” in moving information from the sensory register to the working memory and
the role of “connections to prior knowledge” in moving information from working
memory to long-term memory.
