Lab 2: Installing Windows XP using Virtual Box and Setting up NAT Network in virtual Box
Date of the Session: ___/___/___ Session Time:_____to______

Learning outcome:
• Understanding how to setup victim machine in virtual Box
• Understanding how to setup NAT network in Virtual Box
Pre-Lab Task:
• What do you meant by victim computer?

A victim computer is the computer in which any attack has been initiated. Or the
one who as suffered from any attack. For example the recent ransomware attack
on ACER server, caused very big effect on company and cost a fortune for getting
the data back/unlocked. In this case the victim computer was one from the ACER
server’s.

• What are different service packs available in windows XP?

Windows XP has provided 3 service pack. A service pack is a cumulative update

package that is a superset of all updates, and even service packs, that have been released
before it.

Three service packs have been released for Windows XP. Service Pack 3 is slightly
different, in that it needs at least Service Pack 1 to have been installed, in order to
update a live OS. However, Service Pack 3 can still be embedded into a Windows
installation disc; SP1 is not reported as a prerequisite for doing so.

Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows XP was released on September 9, 2002. It contained over
300 minor, post-RTM bug fixes, along with all security patches released since the original
release of XP.

Service Pack 2 (SP2) was released on August 25, 2004. Headline features included WAP
encryption compatibility for Wi-Fi & usability improvements to the Wi-Fi networking user
interface

The third and final Service Pack, SP3, was released to manufacturing on April 21,
2008, and to the public via both the Microsoft Download Center and Windows
Update on May 6, 2008.
• What is an NAT network?

Network address translation (NAT) is a method of remapping an IP address space into

another by modifying network address information in the IP header of packets while
they are in transit across a traffic routing device. ... One Internet-routable IP address of a
NAT gateway can be used for an entire private network.

In Lab Task:
With the help of you Harsha has installed the Kali Linux in his virtual box now Harsha was
interested in setting up a victim machine to learn some techniques of Ethical Hacking now help
Harsha to setup windows XP machine which act as a victim machine to practice Ethical Hacking.
Setting up windows is easy just like we installed kali. Similarly, first, we have to download the iso
file of Windows XP, then we have to install the windows XP for that we have to install the iso of
windows XP and load it to our virtual box. Then just as we have done to install kali similarly we
have to make ma virtual machine them allocate it with ram and memory them load the iso and
complete the installation. Then you are ready to go.

Post Lab Task

Harsha was unable to communicate with Kali Linux using his Windows XP in virtual box now
help Harsha to setup a NAT network in virtual box and make a connection between Kali Linux
and windows XP by isolating the Host Machine.
For setting the NAT network we have to open vm then after that click the window icon on left
hand. It will appear when we install our window xp. After that right click open settings then
open networks and there you will find an adapter option in the adapter drop down from there
we will select NAT option which will allow to connect both kali and windows.
