Course
description
This course introduces the students to single and multiple phase systems. An
integrated approach to the study of material and energy balances, chemical
processes and their importance in chemical engineering. Topics include: typical
chemical processes, principles of the conservation of mass and energy, steady
state material and energy balances applied to both reacting and nonreacting
systems.

Course Title: Material and Energy Balances

Credit Hour: 3
Prerequisite: Chemical Engineering Principles

COURSE OBJECTIVES
On completion of this course the students will be able to do the following:
 Apply concepts of single and multiphase systems
 Carry out PVT calculations for gas using different equations of state.
 Analyse multiphase systems.
 Formulate and apply energy balances.
 Apply energy balances on nonreactive and reactive single-unit and multiple-unit processes
and multiphase systems.
 Learn how to use Computer programs to solve material and energy balance equations for both reactive
and nonreactive systems.
