MATH100 GROUP ACTIVITY (FEB 03, 2022) Amil, Lacaya and Porras

A. What is the difference between English sentence and mathematical sentence? Give an example to
support your answer.

English sentence must contain a complete thought which consists a subj and a predicate. The subject
contains a noun and a predicate is a phrase that describes/modifies the subject.

Example: Lara is beautiful

• "Lara" is a noun (subject)

• "is beautiful" is a predicate

Meanwhile, mathematical sentence also states a complete thought. It may either be true or false but
not both.

Examples:

• √144=12

• 50>-50

• 50 ∈ {2𝑛, 𝑛 ∈ 𝑁}

B. Differentiate between expression and sentence. Give an example

A mathematical expression, also called expression, is a mathematical sentence that includes at least one
operation, numbers, and/or variables without an equal sign.

Examples: 2x+3, 48/y

While a mathematical sentence makes a statement about two expressions. The two expressions either
use numbers, variables, or a combination of both. A mathematical sentence can also use symbols or
words like equals, greater than, or less than. It may either be true or false but not both.

Examples: 3+4=7, √49=7

C. State the truth of sentences. Give an example

Truth of sentences state that mathematical sentence may either be true or false but not both

Examples:

• (6)²=36

• √81=9

• 12 ∈ {2𝑛, 𝑛 ∈ 𝑁}

D. Give the difference between unary and binary operations. Give an example

A unary operation is an operation that has only one operand.

For example: -x

Here, the operand is x, the operator is the minus sign, and the operation is negation.

While, a binary operation uses two operands.

For example: y + z

Here, the operands are y and z, the operator is the plus sign, and the operation is addition.
