Mission and Vision:

Jumpstart- Maddy
Jumpstart is a recognized student organization that is partnered with the Life enrichment
Center and Georgia College and State University. Jumpstart is an after hours program
that implements social enrichment and self expressions opportunities for individuals with
Intellectual development disabilities.

The visions of Jumpstart is to reach a day when the community embraces individuals
with IDD for their commonalities and not for their differences

The purpose of the the Jumpstart program is to provide meaningful social enrichment and
self-expressions opportunities to underserved individuals with IDD living in and around
the Baldwin County area.

Throughout the semester we have held various events for jumpstart. One of the first
events we hedl was a valentines date night. We invited all of our friends. The individuals
at the center were able to get dressed up, served dinner and enjoy an evening with their
friends.

One of the other events we held was a canvas and cokes night, where Bri led us a
painting class and we fixed coke floats for the individuals. Coke floats were a first for
many of the individuals!

Our most recent Jumpstart event was an alternative spring break. We packed up and
headed to st simons island where we partnered with Americas Second Harvest of Costal
Georgia and provided food for over 500 individuals in the Glynn County Community.
We also partnered with Keep Brunswick Golden Isles Beautiful and participate in a beach
clean up.

Ashley and Bri will talk more about this!

restock for future mobile drives.
● Volunteered with Keeping Golden Isle Beautiful, a nonprofit organization involved with litter prevention
awareness and beach clean-up.
● An interactive learning experience with Georgia’s Turtle Center allowed the LEC to understand the
importance of wildlife conservation and its mission for the rehabilitation of sea turtles.
● Quality time spent together enhanced the relationships developed and increased the effectiveness of
working together as a team.

Wellness/ Nutrition- Grady

“Food Safety 101”- Jamie

● For the first time ever, individuals from the LEC are enrolled at Georgia College & State University March 8th, 2022
● Food Safety 101 is the first course offered.
● This course will give individuals at the Life Enrichment Center the opportunity to expand their knowledge on food
handling and safety measures in order to potentially open a smoothie/ coffee connected to the center.
● During this course, individuals learned the different hazards, proper food temperatures, proper cleaning/ sanitation,
and other kitchen policies.
● This class provided LEC individuals the chance to tour university dining halls, successfully use kitchen appliances,
and visit local restaurants.
● The Collonade, the official student newspaper for GCSU, did a full documentary on this opportunity.
● Students received a Food Handling 101 Certification of Completion on April 22nd, 2020 for completing the course.

Creative Expressions- Camryn

● Creative Expressions (CE) is an integrated arts program that promotes creativity and self-
expression for artists with developmental disabilities through the use of music therapy,
visual arts, and the performing arts.
● It is our mission to provide artists with disabilities the chance to dream, create and share
their talents with the community.

Public Health issues: using music as therapy to improve the physical, mental, and social health of
the participants. The social benefit is that the individuals are more immersed in the community
around them through engagement with college students and staff. The physical and mental
benefits include the relaxation of the body and mind as well as exercise and movement during
each session.

Planning: We attended the classes and restarted step ‘n time which allowed participants to move
their bodies more and increase their health and wellness. Ashley, Bri, and Jamie also had to step
in and reformulate the MVP’s performance to ensure the participants had a well-choreographed
and executed performance that played to their specific strengths.

What was done: We attended the weekly classes with the individuals to learn and work beside
them (as well as keep them on track) during the whole semester. We also worked with them on
Step ‘n Time and MVP’s to come up with a choreographed routine to their music.

Proposed Implementation and evaluation of the activities:

The Creative Expressions classes are an ongoing collaboration between the Life Enrichment
Center and GCSU’s Music Therapy department. This partnership was something we only
assisted with and it will continue to be at the LEC for years to come. The Step n’ Time program
is one that we worked on starting back up as it hadn’t occurred since COVID-19. The physical,
mental and social benefits of these programs are numerous and will continue to assist the
individuals at the center in their overall health.

Reconnection of Step ‘n Time (Ashley and Jamie)

- Step in Time is a dance group that we brought back to the Life Enrichment Center’s
Creative Expressions Concert.
- Step in Time consisted of 4 LEC dancers and 6 LEC interns. This group met weekly, and
it was a great chance to increase the physical health of Step in Times members due to the
complex movements and training that went into the routine.

Participation in Step ‘n Time (Ashley, Jamie, Maddie, Bri, Camryn, and Zayne)

Music in Motion & Jungle Royales (Maddie and Camryn)

● Music in Motion is a group for individuals to learn sign language that matched the lyrics
to two songs
● We learned several different phrases in a new language each week for our final
performance
● Jungle Royales was a band that each individual got to display their talents in
● Jungle Royales had many different instruments including drums, vocals, bass, electric
and acoustic guitar, and piano

MVP’s & Good Vibrations (Ashley, Jamie, and Bri)

- MVPs and Good Vibrations are the male music groups for Creative Expressions.
- The MVPs is a freestyle, choir, and dance group. This year this group had a hard time
coming up with a routine for the concert, so us interns stepped up and made a routine that
showed each individual member's special talents and captivated the audience.
- Good Vibrations is a percussion drumming group. This group allowed its members to
learn rhythms and match them to music.

Quotes:

“I WANT AN ICE COLD DRINK FROM WENDYS”

A dream for many individuals at the life enrichment center is to be able to further their
education. Therefore, my favorite implementation from this semester was watching that dream
come to reality. For the first time ever, Georgia College & State University worked alongside
LEC for the first continuing education class. Beginning March 8th, 2022, food safety 101 is the
first course provided to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities from the life
enrichment center. The course provided the opportunity for our individuals to expand their
knowledge on food safety, proper cleaning/ sanitation, and other kitchen policies.

The class gave students the opportunity to tour university dining halls which allowed them to
apply their knowledge to visual use. They were also able to visit local restaurants and practice
using kitchen appliances.

The colonnade, a gcsu student run newspaper, did a full documentary on this course and the
individuals in it. This was an extremely rewarding achievement and we were able to see their
gratitude for this opportunity by an extremely sentimental and empowering graduation where
individuals were given a certificate of completion.
