In the passage “Reality TV is still storytelling” by Robert Galisnky, the author is claiming that Reality
TV is worse than other shows. He gives us several reasons as to why reality TV is so bad. one of them being
that the shows are all set up. In some parts you could actually see how upset the author is about what’s going on
in Reality TV. Throughout the whole passage he uses different rhetorical strategies like ethos and pathos to
communicate the message better and let people know what's behind all the unnecessary drama that’s happening
in the shows.
To convince people that his claims are true, he’s using a strategy called pathos, which can be defined as a
way of using emotions so the audience feels some type of emotion towards the issue. In this case Robert
Gainsky talks about a specific show “Here comes Honey Boo Boo” which made him really upset. “ I’m
appalled that TV audiences are disgusted by Honey Boo Boo’s antics and not at the nightly parade of scripted
violence and brutality in their top rated crime dramas.” In these lines, not only is he shaming the industry
itself, but also the audience who doesn’t seem to notice the abuse that the girl is going through. Reading this,
many people would surely feel guilty after realizing that they were focused on the wrong things this whole time.
To explain his claim more, the author also uses ethos. It can be defined as a way to demonstrate
credibility. One of the examples where authors used ethos is: “There has always been the "set up" in show
business. Elvis’s people allegedly paid girls to scream. Sinatra’s people did too. The Beatles had
teams of people funneling hysterical "chicks" into their scene.“ As evidence of reality shows being set
up, he gives us a specific list of shows that we can look into, so we see the examples of a set up.
The purpose of the passage is to show people more examples of bad reality TV and explain the issue in
details. To do so, the author is using pathos ethos. Pathos, to make the audience feel guilty for not realizing the
problem and ethos to give them examples of bad reality shows. The main thing Robert Galinsky wanted us to
understand is that, there’s always been a set up in reality shows, producers only chase money and attention and
to get what they want they’re willing to create as much drama as possible.
