Part-B: Closed-book [Marks: 55, Duration: 90 min.

]
Instructions:
1. Start a new question on a fresh page and answer all the parts of the question together.
2. Make appropriate assumptions wherever necessary and justify them.

Q1. Consider a DC-to-DC step-down converter employing L-type zero-current-switching res-

onance scheme. The converter is supplied from a 12 V DC source, and it feeds a R-type load.
The average value of the load current is 0.5 A. The resonant circuit parameters are 0.05 µF
and 100 µH.
(a) Draw a neat, labelled circuit diagram. [5 Marks]

(b) Derive the expression for the time instant at which the current through the inductor (of
resonant circuit) becomes zero. [5 Marks]

(c) Calculate the numerical value of the time instant derived in part (b) above. [5 Marks]
Q2. A single-phase full-wave AC to AC voltage controller employing phase-angle control is
fed from a single-phase 230 V, 50 Hz AC source. A load is connected to the controller output
terminals.
(a) If the load is purely resistive with R=50 Ω, then calculate the input VA. The firing angle
is 60◦ . [6 Marks]

(b) If the load is purely inductive, determine the control range of firing angle. Draw the
output voltage and the output current waveforms with respect to the source voltage for
one cycle, for α=90◦ . [6 Marks]

(c) Suppose the load is RL type with R=50 Ω and L=50 mH. If the firing angle is 60◦ ,
calculate the RMS value of the load voltage. [8 Marks]
Q3. Consider a single-phase full-bridge inverter operating at a frequency of 100 Hz. The
inverter is fed from a DC voltage source of magnitude Vs =400 V.
(a) Draw a neat, labelled circuit diagram. The inverter is operated without PWM. If the
load is purely resistive with R=20 Ω, then calculate the output power. [6 Marks]

(b) Suppose the inverter is operated with a single-pulse-width modulation control. The
pulse width is 120◦ . Calculate the RMS value of the output voltage and the fundamental
component of the output voltage. [6 Marks]

(c) The inverter is operated without PWM. The load is RL type with R=20 Ω and L=200 mH.
Derive the expression (and its numerical expression) for the load current in one half-cycle
of the load voltage. Obtain the expression for the final value of the current, I0 , in each
half-cycle and also its numerical value. Assume periodic steady-state operation. [Note:
L
The expressions derived must be in terms of Vs , τ , I0 , etc., where τ = R. The magnitudes
(absolute) of the initial value and the final value of the load current are equal.] [8
Marks]
