NOUN

1. Danh từ số ít là danh từ đếm được với đơn vị số đếm là một

E.g: an apple, a cake, a table…
Note: Một số danh từ có tận cùng là “s” nhưng vẫn thuộc danh từ số ít
E.g:
– Môn học: physics, mathematics…
– Bệnh tật: measles, mumps…
– Đo lường: ten pounds, two kilograms, five miles…
– Thời gian: six months, nine years…
– Giá tiền: 100 dollars…
– Quốc gia: the United States, the Philipines…

2. Danh từ số nhiều là danh từ đếm được có đơn vị số đếm bằng hoặc lớn
hơn hai.
E.g: five apples, two rooms, six phones…
Note: Có nhiều danh từ không có tận cùng là s nhưng vẫn là danh từ số nhiều
E.g:
– Danh từ chỉ tập hợp: police, people, cattle, army, children…
– Nhóm tính từ có “the” phía trước: the poor, the rich, the blind, the dumb, the injured…

3. Cách chuyển danh từ số ít thành số nhiều

a. Thông thường danh từ đều thêm “s” vào cuối để thành số nhiều
E.g:
– a car -> cars
– a house -> houses
– a ticket -> tickets
– a shop -> shops
b. Danh từ tận cùng là CH, SH, S, X thì thêm “es” vào cuối.
Chú ý: từ có tận cùng là z thì nhân đôi chữ z và thêm es bình thường
E.g:
– one box -> two boxes
– a watch -> watches
– a class -> classes
– a quiz -> quizzes

c. Danh từ tận cùng là “y”, trước “y” là phụ âm đổi thành “ies”
E.g:
– butterfly -> butteflies
– baby -> babies

d. Danh từ tận cùng là một chữ O thêm “es” vào cuối

E.g:
– mango -> mangoes

– tomato -> tomatoes

– potato -> potatoes
Note: Một số từ đặc biệt chỉ thêm “s” như photos, pianos.
e. Danh từ tận cùng là F, FE, FF ta bỏ đi và thêm “ves” vào cuối
E.g:
– a wife -> wives
– a bookshelf -> bookshelves
– a leaf-> leaves

6. Một số danh từ bất quy tắc

Danh từ số ít Danh từ số nhiều
ox: con bò oxen
mouse: con chuột mice
goose: con ngỗng geese
child: đứa trẻ children
man/woman men/women
sheep: con cừu sheep
tooth: răng teeth
foot: bàn chân feet
7. Danh từ có dạng số nhiều và số ít giống nhau như:
a sheep – sheep, a deer – deer, a moose – moose
a fish – fish (fishes: dùng khi chỉ các loài cá khác nhau )
a dozen – two dozen roses, a hundred – several hundred men (nhưng có thể nói: dozens
of roses, hundreds of people)
