Four materials used by Tainos to construct their houses were:
• sand
• ash
• crushed shell
• used dyes from plants to colour.
b. Outline three (3) ways in which Taino and Kalinago technologies were
similar (9 marks)
Three ways in which the Taino and Kalinago technologies were similar are:
• pottery-
Both were very skilled potters although the Kalinago were not as sophisticated as
the Taino
• cotton weaving- Taino women were sophisticated weavers of cotton. They
made fibres that were then used to make nets for fishing, nets for protection
against insects, hammocks and strainers. Kalinago cotton textiles technology
was more advanced and they were well known for their woven cloths.
• canoes- They were both very skilled in making canoes. Tainos showed
balance, and were designed for speed and easy steering. Kalinago canoes
could hold up to 100 people.
c. Describe three (3) achievements of the Maya in Science and technology
(12 marks)
Three achievements of the Maya in Science and technology:
• Astronomy-
The Maya studied the heavenly bodies and recorded information on the
development of the sun, the moon, Venus, and the stars. They were able to
calculate the exact length of a year.
• Ball Courts-
Maya loved their games and there were ball courts in every city. Games were
very important to them and held extraordinary significance to the Maya. The
games were usually played during religious celebration and lasted for 20 days.
• Chocolate-
The ancient Maya were the first to discover the many uses of the cacao bean.
They mixed the cacao bean with pepper and cornmeal to make a spicy chocolate
drink. Since sugar was very rare then they didn’t suffer from sugar related
conditions but their discovery of this use of the cacao bean has lead to the
creation of modern day chocolate.
