THE
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
MUSEUM
I think it is only suitable that museums honour important people. In the UK, there are museums
celebrating the lives of writers like Charles Dickens, musicians like the Beatles and doctors like Sigmund
Freud. They are a reminder of how these people contributed to our nation and hopefully will inspire the
next generation. A recommended but not an especially well-known museum is one that is dedicated to
Florence Nightingale, who is considered by many to be the architect of modern nursing.

I remember learning about this extraordinary woman when I was in primary school. Her story inspired us
all. Florence Nightingale, also known as the Lady with the Lamp, believed God had called her to help
others, and despite family opposition, she taught herself the essentials of nursing and began working in
London. When she heard about the terrible conditions of the injured soldiers in the Crimean War, she
travelled out to the battlefields to help. Her experience there convinced her of the importance of proper
hygiene and sanitation, and she went on to establish a nursing school in 1860 at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Today, part of this hospital contains the Florence Nightingale Museum. It is organised into three sections
chronicling Nightingale’s life, from her early childhood years through her experience in the Crimean
War and, finally, to her campaign to promote sanitation in homes and hospitals. On display are many
tools which were used by Nightingale and the other nurses in addition to her personal items, such as her
clothes and her famous lamp.

The museum, which charges a nominal fee, is open daily and is easily accessible by public transport,
including a riverboat. While it is a museum which will be of great interest to anyone with a nursing
background or young people who aspire to embark on a career in nursing, it is also ideal for school trips
and private parties as well as family visits. I admit that I’ve been to more impressive museums, but I’m
glad I took the time to visit this one and left with an even greater respect for the work of Florence
Nightingale.

HOW I STARTED BLOGGING

by Jamie Burton, aged 16

There are blogs about almost every subject under the sun. The great thing about blogs is that anyone can
write one. Did you know that someone writes a new blog every second? 16 In fact, a recent survey
showed that 20 percent of young people have blogs. So, in that sense, I’m not unusual.

It turns out, however, that many of the popular teen blogs are written by girls and that they tend to write
about fashion. That’s where I’m different. 17 I’ve always liked writing so it seemed logical to me
that I would write about what interests me – restaurants and cooking. I started off by writing about
restaurants in my neighbourhood. Then, I thought it would be a good idea to add some recipes. I was
lucky when a local chef agreed to share some of his favourite recipes on my blog. My followers loved
that! One of the secrets to having a successful blog is good publicity. 18 After our local newspaper
interviewed me about my blog, the number of people following my blog began to rise. Probably as
a result of that, a really expensive restaurant in town invited me to come and try their new menu. 19
Before I agreed, of course, I explained that I would have to give my honest opinion even though they
wouldn’t charge me anything. They said that they knew this and so I went for a meal. Luckily the food
was great, so I didn’t have any negative comments to make.

A teenager who wants to write a blog has to be careful when he or she starts out. Writing a blog can have
advantages and can sometimes set a young blogger up for a future career. If you are really good, you can
even make some money from it. On the other hand, there are some drawbacks. Protecting your privacy is
very important. 20 Some people copy directly from other people’s blogs without realising that this is
against the law. All in all, if you have the necessary skills and do your homework, it isn’t too difficult to
write a successful blog.

A I was also very lucky in this respect.

B It is important that nobody can find out your true identity.

C And many of the people who write them are teenagers.

D Fashion is very important to me.

E There are also several legal implications which must be considered.

F I’m a boy and I write about food.

G I’ve got a lot of advertisements on my site.

H They said the meal would be free!
