Ork setlements are made up ofthe homesteads of Ork families clustered Sround the stronghold oftheir warlord. A family contains several houssholds and each housshold build ite own solidly constructed hovel jammed next to those of the other households facing into a central defended courtyard. The oaly way into « family seulement {sthrough# single gateway. The counyard is the centre of acy for the Ork family, ln the courtyard are the drope and next to the dope ae ‘open areas culvated with small forests of fungus. Here the Snollings frolic and the Getchin go ahout heir tasks while the Oks laze around and sharpen their weapons Each housshold builds their own hovel, blockhouse or shack out of ‘the most durable materials they can find. Typically, they search for the biggest rocks and boulders inthe locality and rol them to the site to make the foundations. Gretchin and Snetlings fll up the geps ‘between the boulders with clay, mud and other sticky materials which are allowed 19 harden, creating a solid blockhouse forthe household to dwell in, The basic structures can be large of small, one or several forays high, and may incorporste grabbed-out bunkers and cellar The method of consiucton I the norm i Ork setemens and would be wed for the sort of building we've dosribing in this ani MAKING THE ORK BUILDING Ll A 1. The first thing you need to dois transfer the building plans onto yur foum card. Photocopy the templates and atach the photocopics to the foam card ~ masking tape is ideal for his. Pusha pin tough tach ofthe comer points on the templates making » hole in the foam cand undemeath. When you've finished, remove the templates and ‘raw in the lines between the holes with «pencil ~ you should now hve a perfect copy ofthe originals. 2 Before you star to glue the pieces together, there are several things ‘yu need 10 do, First, the doors need to be able to fit behind the door ‘penings. You'll need to make 2 doors for thi building, the third centance being left open fr the time being. Fr each door, cut apiece of thin card slightly larger than the the door opening (ase the door ‘opening asa stencil if you like). Next, to get the effect of wooden planking, ct few stripe of balsa 4-Smm wide and atic there onthe ‘ard, leaving a light gap between each trp. If you out the trips without using ruler you'll gta rough Osky fest the door. 3, While you're waking for the glue to set on the doors, round off all the edges ofthe doorrames, windows and butiestes. You're not after any sharp edges on this building because you want it. look like it's ‘heen mae with clay or mad. Only tim away the frent surface of the oar catd as you don’t want to alier the size of there oles. By the time you've done this, the door should he dy and ean be stuck 1 the insides of the walls, Exped Frat View a 4, Referring to the exploded diagram above, stato assemble the building, Attach the building toa base of mounting car aboat L4G x 190mm, Not thatthe side walls (B1, BZ and F) ae not as wide a the font and back walls (AI, A2, G1 and G2) ~ glue them inside the front and back walls 30 that the Square roofs (D and Hl) ft nelly on top. When you're making the taller section of the beildin, remember te ack te frat floor (C) nto ple before you sick the ast wall on ‘When the glue hs ried, firmly round off all the edges on the builing ina similsfshion tothe doors, windows and batreses, Ovetead View I J 5, When you've finished rounding everything off, stick all the bbteetses (Land J) nto the mai building. The plan above shows you where each butress shouldbe positioned. 6. You can make the supporting girders poking out the front of the building from offeus of sprucs ~ we used the ones from the Ork Baitlewagon cat to length of aboct 30mm, bot any Sanilaraised Scraps from your bits box Wil do just as well. Carefully make holes in the foam card with your modelling knife, as indicated inthe dingram, ‘and push about a third of the girder in, fixing i in place with all orpose glue Unies the sprue you're eating i very thi, never try and eat through itin one go by using alt of fore — its all too easy forthe modelling Jif to slip or forthe Bade to map and fly off ina random direction. ‘We tend to favour chopping the sprue ito lengths sigh longer than wre need with a prof wire cutters, nesiening the ends Ister with ‘modelling knife. 11. The scaffolding is pot into position next. You can make this from spraes, thin balsa dowel or plastic tubing. If possible, glue the Scaffolding to the underside of the top girders and the insides of the firders on the firs. floor. The form car step by the main doorway, fen i the photo, can he sed to support the rafflding a the bottom Ifyou make eles in cand glue the poles ino place. ‘Tae balcony is mae by cating some more sips of hin hala (aboot Sim wide). Check the lei by placing them over the first floor ‘irders and mark where to cut witha pencil. When the planks are cut to the right siz, glue them into place, 8. The roof plates are made from sections of thin card cut out and sled ito place I's « good idea to make the first piece long enough to cover all 3 girders. Ifyou cutaway a small section af thi it pives the impression of two teparate patos whan the ether sections of card are stuekon op. For extra det, you can glue rivets made from small teetins of rund sprue on tothe plates, wos2 9. The platfom forthe tank on the lower roof i made aut of thin strips ‘fb about Smm in width held together by 2 sections of balsa glued ‘cross the srps. You can make the tak itself from any witably-sized plastic tub, botle top, lid ete (we used » cut-down 35mm film Container). Glue the tank ento the plasform, which in tum you glue 10 the rooftop. You can put extra deal on the task by the addition of pipes (made from sprues) and ui (circular piece of card with rivets ‘made from section! of round sprue a before). 10. The second flor door canbe left open or you can ad simple ‘curain as we've done. We made this from a shon section of round sprue forthe rail with a sheet of paper folded slightly and wrapped ‘ver the sproe a the top, 11. You now give the surface ofthe building a cost of Plyriple (or similar selftexturing wall covering). This serves two purposes: it textures the flat surface ofthe foam card an it helps io cover any gaps for sections that have been left when trimming the edger of the building. Try not to get any ofthe texturing on the doors, girders, planking etc. Don't ure anew brich when texturing the building as Is bound to get damaged. At this stage you ean add any final detail like hinges, rivets and handles fr the door. Te hinges and handles have been cut fom bls scrape wih he rivets Being made a before PAINTING GUIDE If you want to follow our colour scheme to pint your Ork bulding, details are given below ~ ofcourse, you're free to create your own colour scheme. We've chosen shades of light brown and ochre so that ‘curbing looks like its gota natal mad or clay finish, int the main body ofthe building with « Skull White/Ore Brown) ‘Bestia Brown mix wo achieve » creamy-yellow cotour. Shade it by ‘adding more Besial Brown tothe original colour and then highlight by adding more Skull White to the original colour. For the wooden ‘pnts like doors and planking, use a base coat of Chaos Black and, ‘nce this is dy, deybrush with Bestal Brown. Give the metalic areas base coat of Chuos Blac and then drybrush with Chainmail For the ‘st effect on the oof plates, add washes of Orange and Brown Ink ‘ntl you get the desired effect If you want toad rusty streaks othe tank ike we have, pint a thinned mix of Terecoia and Blood Angel ‘Orange over « wath of Orange and Brown Ink. Avital part of the decoration of say Orc house are the glyph painted ‘onto the wall. These may bosstfully announce the prowess of the ‘oceans, adverse their services if they are Oddoy2, speak oftheir wealth of notable vietores in batle, and generally belittle the ‘enemies. There may also be clan symbols and decorations appropriate to the clan ~ for example, Goff houses may sport black and white checkered pattem around the doors or lene the top edge ofthe wall 1chold often pain ther insignia ona front wal oftheir dwelling = this insignia is the same design as the backplates worn by the Inoasehold's Boys, Some households slo display captured backpates taken from enemies whe have fallen in bate. The more fearscme a hascheld in battle, the more enemy backplate it will ave to show off yon find painting the plyphs or backplates intimidating, you can use photocopies ofthe glyphs and insignia in Waaargh the Orks and stick there directly onto the wall of the building after you've finished pining it. We find it's bet to paint the photocopied glyphs before Sou cut them out o stick them on the walls. (Once the paint har dred im the bate 1 shape and give it covering ‘of PVA glue. Sprinkle the coral sand on the base and allow it to dry propery before panting the base to match your own terrain.
