What Caused the American Revolution?
● The American Revolution had been about retaining autonomy and having local
control politically and economically.
● It began with the Stamp Act of 1765, Great Britain tried and failed to raise
revenue from their subjects in the American colonies
● The colonists protested the taxes and rioted in the streets
Who Was Involved?
● Many people were involved in the American Revolution but some of the main
people were, George Washington, Abigail Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick
Henry, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson
○ George Washington’s role- served as a general and commander in chief during the American
Revolution
○ Abigail Adams- expressed how women should be treated
○ Benjamin Franklin’s role- helped draft the Declaration of independence and U.S. Constitution
○ Patrick Henry’s role- influential leader opposing the British government
○ Alexander Hamilton’s role- convinced New Yorkers to confirm the U.S. Constitution
○ Thomas Jefferson’s role- Primary draftsmen of the Declaration of independence
Importance of this Revolution
● It was the 1st successful movement of modern history
● This was the independence movement of 13 British colonies
● Began the United States
● This movement allowed other countries motivation to fight for their
independence
Desired Outcome vs. The Outcome
● The goal- for the colonists to be free from the British
● The outcome- gained independence from the British
● The goal of the American Revolution is exactly what they got as their outcome

● Led-into war in 1763-1774
● Independence Declared 1775-1777
● War in North 1777-1778
● Southern Campaign 1779-1981
● Aftermath 1782-1787
