Presenter Teenagers iiday have a bad reputation,
People say chat they are lary and untidy and that
they do very little to help their parents in rhe
house, Bur there are sume teenagers for whom,
this description is just noc true ac all,
Iris estimated that rhere are more than 200,000
teenagers in the UK who have ro look aftera
member of their family, their mother or father
or brother or sister. in many cases these young
helpers, or ‘carers’ as they are called, have to de
hetween 25 and 50 hours work helping in their
house. as well as doing their school work.

17 years old, and who both look after members of

Presenter Who do vou look after?
Alice Hook after my mum. She has ME —it's an
illness which means that she feels tired all the
time and she can't walk very well. And | also look
after my younger brother and sister. He's six and
she’s four.
Daniel | look after my mum tou, She had a bad car
accident seven years ago and she can’t walk. | also

Alice On anormal day | get up early and | clean
the house and | do che ironing. After school!
sometimes take my mum to the shops in her
wheelchair. In the evening mv dad makes the
dinner — I'm nor very good atcooking! But make
sure my brother and sister eat their dinner and
then | putthem co bed.Daniel My day's quite similar. | clean the house and
iron but | also de the cooking and the shoppi ng.
My dad left home four vears ago so we're on our
own. I take my sister to school and make sure that
my mum is OK. I need ta give her mussapes every
evening.
Presenter How do vou feel about the way you live?
Alice [don't realls mind looking after my mum,

Daniel | enjoy what [do because I'm helping
my mum and Pin helping my sister at the same
time. Of course it’s true that | can’ tgo our much,
because | need to spend most of my time at home,
| sometimes go out with my friends but [don't like
leaving my mum on her own. Lalwavs make sure
that Phave my mobile. 1fmy muni needs anything.
