The Pythagorean Theorem

Rossaura De La Cruz and Arly Rodriguez

Day 1
Day 1: Essential Questions and Learning Targets
Essential Questions:
1. Who was Pythagoras and what was his impact on mathematics?
2. How can we use the pythagorean theorem?
Learning Targets:

- I can describe the impact Pythagoras had on the pythagorean theorem

- I can explain what the pythagorean theorem is
- I can solve mathematical problems using the pythagorean theorem
Do now:
Think and write about 2-3 different ways we use
mathematics in our everyday lives
Pythagoras
Born in 570 BC in Samos, Greece
Died 490 BC
Greek Philosopher
Made contributions to Geometry
Early life:
- Pythagoras's father was a Merchant as a child
Pythagoras traveled to different places with his
father
- He lived in Egypt for a few years to learn about
Mathematics, Religion and culture of Egyptians
- Visited Babylon
- Traveled to increase his knowledge
-
Pythagoras's School
- Established in Croton, Southern Italy
- 530 BC
- Created this school to teach about what he learned in Egypt
- He taught-
- Mathematics
- Music Theory
- Religion
- Astronomy
- Philosophy
- Pythagoras established strict rules
- No writing left from Pythagoras
Development of The Pythagorean Theorem
- Pythagoras proved the formula, even
though civilizations before had used the
Pythagorean Theorem
- First known civilization to use it
were the Ancient Babylonians in
1900 BC
- There is speculation that it may have
been one of his students that
developed the theorem
- Applies to Right Triangles only

- Formula: c²=a²+b²
- Hypotenuse- The opposite side of the right
triangle
- The theorem states that the square of the
length of of the hypotenuse is equal to the
lengths of the legs
