During this semester in EDUC 360 we were assigned different readings each week.

These
readings helped us develop lesson plans that build our students' literacy skills.

Learning Segment 4: Summarizing and Note Taking (Chapter 3)

strategies for increasing student achievement. Alexandria, Va. :Association for Supervision and
Curriculum Development,

Summary- In this chapter summarizing and note taking was emphasized as an important method
to use to help students understand readings better. This reading was important for me because in
social studies classes students do a lot of readings and sometimes they are harder to understand.
The reading included different types of summary frames that we can assign to our students. One
frame that could be effective in a social studies class would be the Topic- Restriction- Illustration
frame. This frame includes questions that break down the readings. Such as what is the general
statement or topic? This simple question is necessary for students to answer to ensure that they
understood the purpose of the reading. Through summarization frames teachers can have their
students practicing their writing skills. But they are allowing students to build their reading skills
because to fill out the frame students must analyze the reading.

Example of how to use the Topic- Restriction- Illustration Frame:

because perfect right angles made their

the structures straight because if not they
would fall over.

Summary- This article “Five basic questions to ask about your English learners” by Barabara
Gottschalk discusses different questions you should attempt to find an answer to when you have
an ELL student in your classroom. You should ask yourself “How many ELLs do you have?” As
a teacher you should know how many ELL students you have. But you should also keep track of
how many ELL students are in your school and district. You should also strive to get to know
your ELL students. As a teacher you should know how long they have been living in the United
States, what country they came from and their scores from proficiency tests. It is important to
understand their background, especially their native language. By knowing this information you
can better aid your ELL students.

Edutopia. Retrieved May 6, 2022, from

Summary- This article explains the importance of developing literacy skills in each subject.
There’s the assumption that literacy skills need to be taught only in English Language Arts
classes. However, literacy skills are necessary in every subject therefore we should find ways to
help build literacy skills in every class session. Methods of having students build their speaking
skills in class is to have their talk with their partners, or having socratic seminars in class. To
build their writing skills teachers can have students do stop and jots and quick writes. Lastly, for
readings we should aid students with graphic organizers to help them break down the readings
and help them understand it.
