A connection...
I have a connection to one of the activities used by Robert in the reading which had
the students read a nonfiction text and use Post-its to make note of main ideas and
details they come across in the reading. In my placement, we do a lot of identifying
main idea and details in nonfiction stories, but we haven't done it by using Post-its to
write the information down on while reading, before sharing with a small group. We
have used Post-its during reader's workshop, however it was to write down key
vocabulary words or sneaky sounds in words. Our students are already familiar with
this idea of using Post-its while reading, and they seemed to really enjoy this tactic,
so I think the extension of using it with main idea and detail is very useful.

In the classroom...
One thing that I could use in the classroom is the "You Be the Teacher, Jigsaw, and
Gallery" activity. I remember doing activities like this during my school experience,
and I think it is a very effective and fun way for the students to be more in control of
their learning. Not only does it encourage collaboration between students, but it
also allows the students to be their own teachers by working together to come up
with the information that they agree is the most important and relevant to share.
Then, the jigsaw of putting all the different information from each group together
helps the students learn from each other, rather than purely from the teacher. I
could definitely see myself using this quite often in my own classroom.
